  • Life is Simple, but Not Easy

This is the first-ever guest post on my blog, written by an exceptional girl I know. She reveals what she has learned since studying in America and what she foresees in the near future. I hope you enjoy reading this, because I sure did!

It has been one and a half years since I left my parents in China and came here to the US. Such an adventure to a completely new land seems more exciting rather than scary to me. Recalling the past time, what occurred to me first is appreciation, appreciation for all the help I received from my roommates, alumni, new friends and even strangers. I survived culture shock, enjoying the virtue of different cultures while keeping my good Chinese values.

Life as a graduate student is simple and joyful. Classes, assignments and exams are the main melody of my student life. Many new trials definitely added more excitement to my routine and helped me grow up to be a more complete adult; first time to be a teaching assistant for graduate students who are generally older than me, first time talking about research topics with someone in my field in person, first time studying my health insurance policy and housing contract, first time cooking by myself...

There were many firsts, as you can see. It has been stressful, but I try to remember that a caterpillar will struggle in pain before it comes out of its cocoon and grow into a beautiful butterfly. The collisions of new and old living modes trigger anxiety, excitement, frustration and expectations. And in each collision, I chose the one I believed was right at that moment.

The pursuit of happiness is a long journey. A lot of people will show up in our lives but few of them stay, and even fewer will become our friends and that special someone. Talking with my fellows from different countries gave me an opportunity to think over the meaning of happiness.

What is your first reaction when we mention the sense of happiness in African countries? I was surprise when my African fellow told me that in the 1990s Nigeria was ranked top 10 on the happiness index. She continued to tell me, "People in Zimbabwe are happy. To see the sunrise tomorrow is happy. Life is simple. People in countries like Nigeria and Zimbabwe, whose life expectancy is about 50 years old, can still feel that sense of happiness." After our discussion, I came to this conclusion: Life is simple, but not easy. We need to fight for our happiness, however, peacefully.

Each conversation with my parents, each gathering with my friends, each adventure to a new city, each change I make in a new culture…I will take these as gifts and treat them appropriately. I will feel blessed and lucky every time. My parents often tell me that I am not entitled to have love and support from them, my friends or my future significant other. It is me who should prove that I deserve it.

To make peace with life, marry passion with it and be appreciative lights my new life here. Hassles about my foreign status, increasing studies, increasing workloads, and looking for the best of me and my significant other are going to be some of the many challenges and opportunities that lie in front of me in this new year. Hopefully I can survive.

Happy New Year, my friends. I am always happy to meet and get to know all of you.

    ~Cindy

  • Regrets from New Year's Eve

During my NYE party last weekend, there was a board where people could put up their regrets from 2011 and their resolutions for 2012.  There were only a few resolutions posted, but there were quite a lot on the regrets side.  I thought some of them were pretty funny and interesting, so I want to share with you guys the notes.

I like how they put down "left" at first.

    Very funny -______-

@DrakonFyre, I'm pretty sure whoever wrote this was referring to you.  Any guesses who wrote this?

You're one of us now, @Joanna_Said_SO, and there's no going back!

I can guess who might have wrote this...

What do you guys think that last word is?  It looks like "Tony" but there wasn't a Tony at the party.  Very curious...who else could it be?

  • Mahalo, Hawaii!

I was very lucky to visit Hawaii this past week.  It certainly was a memorable trip and I like to show you guys some of my experiences while I was there.

Before I begin this long post, I would like to introduce to you all to the special someone that I mentioned in the last post (in case you were not one of the 329201 people that apparently noticed the overdue update to my FB relationship status last night...):

I MAY write more about her in future posts.  For now, here are some things I learned while visiting the island of Oahu:

@Arenadi is as good of a cook as his food blogs make him out to be.  Very tasty baby back ribs!  I am very fortunate to taste his meat (I don't care how bad that sounds because it's true!).

Despite what some people believe, I can confirm that @AbsolutAngel64 is indeed not a guy but instead a funny, awesome woman.  Thanks again for treating us to our first Zippy's meal!

So much more Xangans (like @DavidMiya) have connections to Hawaii than I thought.

The view from the hotels we stayed at were the best I've ever had.

    The fake thing...

...most definitely does not compare to the real thing.

Being in Hawaii reminds me how fair skin I really am.  Oh whale!

Hawaii is the place of the biggest sushi I've ever ate (at Kuru Kuru Sushi)

    Me gusta comfy bathrobe.

When I see signs like these, I can't help but pose with them.

When two people meet in the middle, it can be a wonderful place to end up in.

Double rainbows are plentiful, but I still do not know what does it mean.

There are quite a lot of DINGs here (although if you read this post, you wouldn't be surprise by this at all)

It is not a good idea to climb Diamond Head in jeans and a button down shirt.  At least I was not wearing heels like SOMEONE I know.

Food in Hawaii is as tasty as you can imagine.

When in Hawaii, you will be sipping down tons of mai tais.

There are bathrooms in Hawaii that are better looking than my house.

The beaches are unbelievable, especially the ones away from the typical tourist areas.

Five days in Hawaii was not enough.  I cannot wait to go back.

  • Ending the Year Right

    Guess where I am?!

    Alooooohaaaaaa Hawaii!

Okay okay, for those of you with keen eyes you can probably tell that I'm not really there...yet.  However, I WILL be in Honolulu in a couple days.  I will be taking my first trip there with a special someone (more on that later, maybe) from December 21-26 and I am very thrilled to go!  I've been meaning to visit there for the longest time, so I'm looking forward to the luaus, the beaches, the mai tais, and the warm, sunny weather.  I'm also look forward to meeting up with @Arenadi and @Absolutangel64 while I'm in town, both of whom have been very helping in the planning of my trip.  Thanks!

When I come back, I will have a few days to rest up and get used to East Coast time before I host my New Years' Eve Party at my place in Virginia!  I threw one last year that was very fun and successful (see my recap post here).  This year's party is looking to be twice as big.  While I had around 25 people last year, this year I'm expecting between 50-70 .  There's going to be a lot of games, karaoking, and drinking going on that night that's for sure.  I'm already nervous about the pictures and videos that will come out, but at least I know I will be having a good time in all of them!

In some ways, I'm actually more excited for my NYE party than my Hawaii trip because so many of my closest friends will be there, including Xangans I've gotten to know over the years from California, Canada, Texas, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and New York.  I wonder if they understand how much it means to me that we will all be ringing in the new year together?  Well, it really does guys.  Who's ready?  Leggo!

So, did I mention just how excited I am for these final weeks of 2011?

It's going to be LEGEN- wait for it...DARY!

I will see you all after Hawaii.  Happy Holidays!

  • Whose Bra is This?

Hey everyone!  Sorry for the lack of updates the past couple of weeks.  I've been doing and preparing for a lot of things lately, which I will go into more details in my next post.  In the mean time, I wanted to tell you all about a funny conversation between my mom and grandma that I witnessed first hand.

Yesterday, I was at my parent's home getting a hair cut from my mom.  In the middle of it, we started hearing commotion coming from my grandma's room.  Soon after, my grandma came over to talk to my mom.  Here's a rough transcript of what followed...

Grandma:  "WHY IS YOUR BRA IN MY DRAWER?"

    Mom:

    "WHAT?!"

Grandma:  "Your bra!  What is it doing in my drawer?!"

Mom (annoyed):  "Why would I put my bra there?"

    Grandma:  "I don't know, that's why I'm asking you!"

Mom:  "Well no way is it mine!"

Grandma:  "It's not mine either!  Come take a look!"

Mom:  "What, no I'm busy!  You bring it over!"

Grandma:  "Okay, hold on.  You'll see!"

(Grandma leaves and come back with bra, out of view from me so I can't see)

Grandma:  "Here!  This is yours, right?"

    Mom (looks)

"HAHAHA, really?  I would NEVER wear something as ugly and cheap as that!"

Grandma (confused):  "If it's not yours or mines, whose is it..?"

Mom:  "It probably IS yours and you just forgot you had it.  Did you ever think of that?"

Grandma (walks away):  "...I swear I haven't seen it before...okay..."

(Mom returns back to cutting my hair)

Mom:  "Sigh!  Crazy woman, thinking that cheap bra is mine.  Who does she think I am?"

    (Brief awkward silence)

Mom:  "She actually thought I would own a bra...MADE IN CHINA??  PSH!"

    Me:  ......

(Mom looks at me, then laughs out loud.  Exactly like this.)

I have to admit, I'm a little curious as to where that bra came from if it's really not my grandma's.  I guess the world will never know.

  • Young Roadlesstaken and Timmmmmmy

While visiting home during Thanksgiving break, I was showing someone my photo albums of me as a kid.  As you might have guessed from the title, @Timmmmmmy appeared a bunch of times in those old shots.  Just for funsies, I will show you guys! *A lot of pictures ahead*

Can you guess who's who? (Hint: Timmy's brother is the boy in yellow, so not him)

    Hawt overalls.

    I was apparently already hammy...

I miss riding these cars!  They were battery-powered and everything.  I wonder how much they cost, especially back then.

Timmy's too cool to smile big, so I will!

I like big balls and I cannot lie.

Birthday king (with leis, obviously).  Look at Timmy's nerd glasses.

Still being cheesy, while Timmy's still playing it cool.

NO TIMMY, I DID NOT STEAL YOUR SEAT HERE!  DON'T JUMP ME BRO!

Oh what fun to reminisce.  Now, Timmy and I are much older and have turned into fine, mature adu-

...Well, I suppose there's still time to grow up, right?

  • What Fills the Void

Last night, my brain decided it would be fun to tire me out so I would go to bed, only for it to say "Nevermind!"  As I lied there annoyed, I started pondering about a lot of things I know I wouldn't be able to figure out overnight.  One of those thoughts was about the motives I have to do what I do, like traveling for example.  I'll say it's because it's fun, that I get to meet up with people and have new experiences, which is all true.  However, there seems to be another reason underneath it all.  I feel I'm trying to find...something.  What that something is is still unclear to me, but I have some theories as to what it could be.

I'm reminded of the situation in a movie called The Adjustment Bureau (some spoilers ahead).  The main character was lonely and unhappy, so he tried to validate himself by becoming a successful politician.  That may have worked out all fine and dandy for him had he not encountered "the girl" (dun dun dun).  As it turned out, his life was better with her around since she provided him the security and happiness he long sought for, and vice versa.

Unfortunately for them, a dilemma arose where he was forced to make a difficult choice: he could stay with the girl but have both of them lose their respective career successes, or they could each have very rewarding careers but do so without each other.  He picked the latter, probably more logical option, at first, but the hole inside of him grew so much that he ended up saying "Screw it!" and fought to be reunited with the girl.  Being together, they didn't have to keep on searching for that validation and success that could possibly fill their voids.  What they had was already enough.

I get how that decision appears to some people, I do.  How foolish, emotional, even irrational for them to pick love!  Don't they realize how much is going against them?  What if they had it all wrong and they end up separating in the future?  I say all of that too, and yet...I have a feeling I would have risked making the same exact choices if there was even the chance we would be fulfilled, and perhaps self-actualize in the process.

Hmm.  Despite all the disillusions and setbacks I've encountered thus far in life, it seems that the hopeful, foolish dreamer that's inside of me does not want to go away.  Well, may he find whatever it is that will be enough to fill any emptiness residing in me.  I'm rooting for you.

  • Look! ASSCAT Member on TV!

You may have noticed that some of the ASSCAT members have not been as active on the site lately.  Sorry about that, but you know how real life can be.  Life has given all of us a lot on our plates, such as finishing grad school, being a BAUSS at work, fending off girls, and what not.

Take Shawn, aka @Junbelievable08 for instance.  You probably don't know this, but Hollywood has been begging to work with him for a while now and Shawn finally found time in his busy schedule to obliged them this year.  Now he's out shooting guest appearances on a bunch of television shows.

He can be elusive to find at times, so let's play a game of...

    ***WHERE'S SHAWN?***

Look who's listening intently to Kathy Bates debating her case on Harry's Law:

I wonder who he's too busy texting with that he completely ignores Gary Sinise and an attractive woman sitting next to him on CSI: NY?  (Must be either one of us or one of his many lady friends...)

Seems like Zooey Deschanel brings out his partying side on New Girl:

Why find Nick when you have lovely Shawn right there?

    Me gusta

Ahh, I saved the best for last.  Nothing too special at first.  Just hipster Shawn chilling on Whitney:

Suddenly, we go from seeing a lot of Shawn's face...

...to seeing a lot of Shawn's booty:

Can it breathe in there, man??

Oh yeah, he likes what he sees.  I don't know how you sneaked that by the FCC, Shawn.  That is too hot for TV!

Alright, we're out of time.  That's it for this week's game of "Where's Shawn?".  Stay tuned next time for upcoming appearances coming to a television show near you!
