I Finally Got My Win!
And oh it feels so good!
It was around spring 2008 the first time I applied to this well known tennis organization. I was just about to graduate college with ample experience and contacts within the place. From everything my contacts were saying, it seemed like I was a shoe-in to get the position. Unfortunately, I ended up making it to the final two candidates only to lose out in the end to someone who was a bit older and more experienced than I was.
I was devastated, to say the least. This was the first time in a while where I felt I completely failed at something I thought I would definitely succeed in. This was a dream organization to work for and to come so close just to falter at the finish line really crushed me.
Still, I didn’t want to give up just yet. Over the course of the following two years, I applied no less than four more times for various positions within the organization. Each time, I made it to the final rounds only to lose out in repeated fashion. It was starting to be a running joke, except I wasn’t laughing.
I was THIS close to waving the white flag. I thought this must have been a sign that it just wasn’t meant to be. I have lost.
Less than a month ago, I received word from my contact that a position opened up and I was the only one she recommended to fill it in. After all the heartache that came from applying for this organization, could this really be it? Will this be the one, or will I get my ego bruised one last time before I totally throw in the towel?
Two days ago, I received my answer: I got the job.
I got the job.
I GOT THE JOB!

YEAHHHHHHHH!!!!My perseverance actually paid off in the end! I finally got my shot at working in my dream job. I’m looking forward to the new change of pace and scenery that will come from this experience. The next step is finding a place to live in northern Virginia (anyone want to house/live with me? I’m being serious.) Ahh, I can’t wait to get this show started. Wish me luck!
I’m considerably happier with my life right now
. After the past few humbling years, I truly needed this big win.

My cousin is really older than me, still plays tennis and is so knowledgeable about tennis, he should be a tennis coach (and he is Chinese). The son of the Chinese lady who I work for is divorced and goes with a woman who is a great tennis partner. It is strange there are so many Chinese tennis enthusiasts. Good luck with your dream job, I suppose we will be reading future exploits from your dream job.

@Roadlesstaken - I was no pro by any measure but, I loved playing. Played through high school, made it to state my senior year. Just happy to qualify having not played for many years and come from a farm town. I coached a girls JV team the year after I graduated. After school was over I no longer knew anyone who played and didn’t have access to any of the clubs. Haven’t played in years now (kids, schedules, access, and illness keep me away) but I think about it nearly every day still. I keep my racket in the trunk of my car, ‘just in case’.

@DessertHer - It’s never too late to get back in it! There’s a lot of flexible leagues and clinics you could do. When you do start again, you might want to get your racket restrung. All that time in the car would have messed up the tension of the strings badly. If you lived closer I would say I could string it.
@Roadlesstaken - It’s in need of new strings. I’ve had it since 2003, strung in 2003. But, it would probably be worthless to string it now since recent history has not brought any games. I’ve checked all the clubs, leagues, and parks a rec programs and none of them can accomidate my schedule. It’s also likely that I wouldn’t be able to continue long after starting up given my injuries (from illness). I have a hard enough time at the gym… I can’t go on the court and not kill it. I’d hurt myself. But, seperate from the bodily problems my husband’s and children’s schedules wouldn’t allow me to participate in any of the programs in my city.
A very heartfelt congratulations Alex! They couldn’t have picked a more enthusiastic and creative person to join their team. I’m expecting lots of pictures and stuff!
