I <3 HK!!!
Today I’m taking a much needed break from all the traveling, shopping, and eating these past few days. I really shouldn’t complain, but too much of a good thing can wear a person down! After eating big meals every few hours I’m starting to get a little sick from food. And visiting all these new places I’ve never seen and buying all these cheap clothes and……oooh who am I’m kidding? I’ve very lucky right now .
Right now, my parents are visiting my mom’s father somewhere in China. I decided not to go because I want to see the fireworks in Hong Kong w/ my cousin Mandy (see above). I’m so happy to have someone my age to hang out with! She’s been helping me out by showing me the area and helping me practice my cantonese, and I riciprocate by helping her w/ her english. I later asked her whether or not I looked like I was from HK or if I looked more like I was from the US or somewhere else, and she said that I actually look like just another HK guy…until I open my mouth . Haha well according to some people I’ve talked to they said my Canto isn’t that bad and I had good pronounciation on the stuff I do know how to say. Ah well, I’ll just keep on practicing. Hopefully my Canto will get much better 2 weeks from now.
I finally got a chance to upload a bunch of pictures and vids on my Facebook (vids are bad quality because I forgot to set it to HQ). Feel free to check them out and let me know what you think!
A couple below:
It’s Bruce Lee!
Lai Ming’s handprint! This was my mom’s favorite growing up
Me about to go up this long stairway up to talk w/ the big man in the sky
My new fiance! Haha.. actually she was a waitress I saw that I thought looked a lot like my friend Heidi from school (looking back now I wouldn’t say they look exactly alike…but she can pull off being her sister, right Denise?), so I asked her if we can take a pic together so I can show people later. Alas, I’m still looking for my Hong Kong Kiss to fill that empty void en mi corizon (sniff T_T )
Anyways…
Like I said in the last entry, I was gonna start compiling a list of differences I’ve notice in HK compare to the US. I’ll add something to the list each time I update, so the list will keep growing. Shall we begin? (Yes Alex!) Alright! let me talk…
~Some interesting things I’ve notice in Hong Kong~
…About the food
*food is reeaaally cheap. My parents and I were regularly getting large meals for about 3 US dollars per person! That could partly explain why we’ve been eating so damn much X_X (see exhibit A and B below)
Dim sum, hot pot, and roast duck galore!
*It’s not normal for restaurants to offer napkins. You have to bring your own usually. Some restaurants will offer those wet napkins for use at the end though.
*If you sit down for food, you will see a toothpick. Yea, instead of offering napkins they would instead give you all the toothpicks you need! Well at least my teeth are clean, if not my sticky fingers
*You will also be given nuts as an appitizer if you sit down. Small salty nuts to be exact.
*Wash your own stuff, fool! Often, we were given a bowl and a pot of hot water before we got our meal so that we can wash our own eating utensils, cups, and plates. Just something else that was unusual for me, but seem second nature here.
*Tea is everywhere. I know that seems pretty obvious since I’m in HK, but it can be overwhelming if you’re not use to it. Surprisingly, there aren’t that many sweet green tea that I’ve found so far, but there sure are a lot of lemon tea (see below)! I use to down those suckers all the time as a kid, so I’m glad to see so much here in HK.
Lemon Tea vending machine! Put one of those at UMBC please!
*Almost as popular are those yummy egg tarts. mmmmMMmmmmMmmmmm. Glad to always have them ready to snack on whenever I needed a fixin’.
Egg tarts? I LOVE EGG TARTS!
If I find some more stuff about food I’ll add them later. Next time, I’ll write about the fashion here in HK.
