Added a clip of his Cheers Darlin’ performance

Note: I’m gonna ramble on about Damien Rice in this entry, so if you don’t know who he is just ignore this

“My boyfriend loves you!”
He played most of his songs (including some of my faves!). I’m gonna try to remember them and comment on what I thought (from his oldest songs to his most recent):
Delicate
Really lovely…unfortunately I missed the first minute or so because I was in the bathroom, but I was still able to hear it in there so it worked out haha.
Volcano
Interesting version…he played the first part on an electronic piano before playing it with his guitar. pretty good still!
The Blower’s Daughter
Ah, of course he needed to sing this one! He sang this after our audience gave him a standing O for like 10 minutes and thanks goodness! I still love this song
Cannonball
The first song of the evening. Honestly…I didn’t really like his live version of it, not because it was sung badly but just the delaying of singing certain phrases. It almost made it seem like he forgot the words…so eh.
Amie
Yes, finally heard this live! He asked our audience whether the next song should be upbeat or mellow, and majority wanted some mellow song haha (quick observation: I did not see one black audience member in the whole auditorium! Well, besides the ushers). But yea, a bunch of people started screaming for him to play Amie and it worked! I wonder if he was planning on playing it anyways because at the end he had his music machine (yea, that’s what im calling it for now haha) play something that sounded like a UFO has came down and left (just like the words in the song!).
Cheers Darlin
I think this performance was even better this time around than the first! He once again sang it while smoking and drinking wine, which made the song so much richer. This was the very last song he sang, so after he was done he just sorta stumbled to the back haha…good stuff.
Here’s a clip I found on youtube:
Eskimo
He started off w/ a story about him throwing his guitar into a radiator out of frustration of trying to create a happy song so his producer would be happy (he actually ended up playing a few lines of some very upbeat song before he was like forget it haha). I forgot how, but he somehow transition the story into this song. Good stuff, but I really wish there were string instruments…it woulda made this song sounded even better i think.
The Professor & La Fille Danse
“This is a story of a penis”. Haha, great stuff. I really liked this one, although I thought that during the middle when he went on for like 203593 measures of just instrumentals was a tad excessive…still, gotta love the “your dick made of wood” line
Woman Like A Man
For some reason when he first started this song I though it was that Nirvana song ” Smells Like Teen Spirit”. Yea, I guess I thought he was gonna do a cover because he played some other rockish song beforehand that I’ve never heard by him (anyone from the show knows what I’m talking about?). Love this song…nice to hear a more rock song after hearing a few of the more mellow ones.
Lonely Soldier
First time I’ve actually heard this song by him. Eh, it was ok….it was sung well but the song didn’t do much for me. Maybe if I listen to it more I’ll change my opinion on it (sorta like with Cheers Darlin and Eskimo)
9 Crimes
This was the first song he played when he came back out a second time. He made the song work despite no Lisa there to sing her part. I’m still confuse on how this song became one of his more famous song…I mean it’s alright, but he’s basically singing the same thing over and over in this one! Not a bad song, but definitely not one of his better ones IMO.
Rootless Tree
Glad to hear the piano version of this song! Powerful song…mhmmm.
Coconut Skin
The most upbeat song I’ve heard from Rice haha. It was good…not my favorite but still nice to listen to.
Me, My Yoke + I
The crazy song heh…he didn’t go all electronic voice in this one like he did last time though. He didn’t add them extra words either; I loved it when he went “BEAT my drum BEAT my drum” like he did at the last show. Ah well.
Accidental Babies
What a sad sad song…but very strong lyrics. Too bad I had to go pee during this song haha. I wanted to get up after he was done w/ this but he went on one of his huge run of instrumental measures that made it seem like the songs was 15 minutes long. Sounds good musically but not so good on my bladder .
And I think that was all. I’m definitely gonna catch the next show of his when he comes back around here .
