  • Happy Chinese New Year!
Sorry that it’s kinda late, but ive been busy all day and
yesterday.  Today, my whole family, raquel, roberto, and his g/f
    dheera went to Lakeforest Mall
for the big Chinese New Year celebration!  There was a lot of
stuff happening over there, such as martial arts, dancing, chinese
yo-yoing, lion dancing, and chinese opera (which my parents
participated in!).  We manage to get front row seat too, so it was
an awesome time.  Got soooo much red envelopes; mmmmm, moolah…

Man, I don’t feel like going to class tomorrow.  I gotta get up
for my 8:30am class!  AHH!  I’m sorta looking forward to my
PHIL 399a:  Philosophy and Film class.  It gonna be like
English 100 w/ movies haha.  Hope that the teacher doesnt screw it
    up tho.

    Here’s my schedule btw:

Heh, those crazy kids reaching for moolah (the kid on the far left looks funny)

Mom singing the opening song w/ all the female singers

    Kinda scary woman upclose

Mom and Dad performing together (best performance of all the chinese opera singers IMO, without bias heh)

I think my mom is singing to us how un-manly my dad is

Some more words being thrown at my dad

Kinda creepy woman in the background (my aunt haha)

…And all of us (sorry for the blurryness; blame my brother who took the shot)

I dont wanna wake up so early for school!!!!

AAJC Demands that CBS Reprimands Radio Host for Mocking Asian Americans

    Washington, DC, Jan. 27,
2006 – The Asian American Justice Center (AAJC) today expressed outrage
over the insensitive and racist segment in the Jan. 24 radio show of
Adam Carolla mocking the Asian Excellence Awards which will be aired on
AZN Television this Sunday, Jan. 29.

    “Adam Carolla demeaned
the work of Asian American actors, directors, and producers and
perpetuated the stereotype of Asian Americans as foreigners,” said
Karen K. Narasaki, president and executive director of the Asian
American Justice Center (AAJC). “Unless Adam Carolla is strongly
reprimanded, and the station and CBS Radio apologize, we will be forced
to ask advertisers to withdraw their support of his show.”

    The Adam
Carolla Show, aired through CBS Radio’s 97.1 Free FM (KLSX-FM) in Los
Angeles, referred to the Asian Excellence Awards as a joke and
repeatedly used the sounds “ching-chong” in recreating a segment of the
awards which were actually done in English. The Adam Carolla Show is
aired in 10 West Coast cities that have the largest Asian American
    populations in the U.S.

    The Asian (AX) Excellence
Awards honors Asian Americans in media who have made a difference in
the United States. The awards will also pay a special tribute to the
    late actor, Pat Morita.

AAJC is encouraging people to call or email the following CBS Radio executives:

    • Joel Hollander, chairman
and chief executive officer, CBS Radio, tel: 212-846-3939, email:
      joel.hollander@infinitybroadcasting.com
    • Dana L. McClintock, senior vice president, CBS Communications Group, tel: 212-975-1077, email: dlmcclintock@cbs.com

A clip of the Jan. 24 Adam Carolla Show is available at: http://www.reelplay.com/adamcarollaclips.html

    AAJC’s affiliate, the
Asian Pacific American Legal Center of Southern California, and other
organizations like the Korean American Coalition of Los Angeles, and
the Media Action Network for Asian Americans have also criticized the
    Adam Carolla Show.

Of course, when contacted for comment, CBS Radio’s VP of Communication Karen Mateo said, “The segment was meant to be humorous and was not meant to offend anyone,”
which is the expected bullshit response. Because really, who are they
    kidding? That’s a straight-up lie if you’re telling me it wasn’t
intended to offend. Then again, they probably just thought, hey, let us
crap on the Asians again! It is humorous! Well, we’re not taking it. That’s racist!”

  • Edit:
    Annoyed…

    From angryasianman.com:

Not that I expect upstanding behavior from morning radio
personalities—they’re like little kids peeing in their pants to get
attention—but this particular moment of radio racims
is worth mentioning because it specifically involves last week’s Asian
Excellence Awards, and it’s got people (especially the organizers of
the show) pretty damn angry. Tuesday morning on Adam Corolla’s
radio show, he and his sidekick were commenting on the Awards. They
claimed they had a clip of an award being presented on the show, which
ended up being two guys exchanging patter in variations of the “CHING
CHONG” schtick. The proceeded to name the nominees—all named “CHING
CHONG”—and presented the award to, of course, “CHING CHONG,” who gave
her acceptance speech in yet more “CHING CHONG” gibberish. This went on
for over a minute. Hey Adam, I didn’t know you spoke Chinese, you
    ignorant, racist ass.

Listen to the offending clip here or here. I’ve also posted the clip for a limited time here (.mp3, 2.14MB). Please disperse and host it on your own sites to spread the word. It should get you good and angry. That’s racist!

I’m hearing rumblings about a response being mobilized. Expect more on this in the coming days. Meanwhile, the real Asian Excellence Awards airs Sunday, January 29 on AZN.

So sad how ignorance like this still exist…

    Past couple of days
have been lazy and leisurely.  Yesterday I
spent most of the day at CP.  I hung out mostly with Jimmy all
day.  As some of you know he transfered over to CP…o well, i
guess that’s one more person i can hang out w/ over at CP on the
weekends.  Apparently some other people also transfer over such as
    Eric, Enoch, and Kevin Wei.

So yea, i helped Jimmy find a place to live and played some ping
pong/pool with him before spending the rest of the time w/ raquel
watching Lost and tennis haha.  This week episode of Lost…wasn’t
that good honestly.  The next new episode seem like it will pick
up the pace though.  In tennis only Baghdatis is left from my
favorites to win.  Hopefully he will at least give Federer a good
fight in the finals (just assuming Federer beats Keifer of course).

    Go Baghdatis!

had some time today, so here are a bunch of quizzes:

    Boone
You scored 67% kindness, 50% courage, 23% seedy past, and 23% secretiveness!

“I know you made a promise. I’m letting you off the hook. Let me go, Jack.”

You are Boone. You are kind and brave, with a slightly less checkered
past than your fellow survivors. You are an open book, and do not keep
secrets from anyone. While your humanitarian efforts are chivalrous,
being so trusting and helpful can get you into major
trouble…especially when you spend your days hanging around John
Locke. Stay away from the manipulative types and you should be winning
a Nobel Peace Prize in no time.

    Your polar opposite is: Danielle.
You are similar to: Jack and Claire.

    The Slow Dancer
    Deliberate Gentle Love Dreamer (DGLDm)

Steady, reliable, and cradling her tenderly. Take a deep breath, and
let it out real easy…you are The Slow Dancer.

Your focus is love, not sex, and for your age, you have average
experience. But you’re a great, thoughtful guy, and your love life
improves every year. There’s also a powerful elimination process
working in your favor: most Playboy types get stuck raising unwanted
kids before you even begin settling down. The women left over will be hot and yours. Your ideal woman is someone intimate, intelligent, and very supportive.

    Your exact opposite:
    The Hornivore

    Random Brutal Sex Master

While you’re not exactly the life of the party, you do thrive in small
groups of smart people. Your circle of friends is extra tight and it’s
HIGHLY likely they’re just like you. You appreciate symmetry in
    relationships.

    ALWAYS AVOID: The Battleaxe

CONSIDER: The Maid of Honor or The Sonnet

So since Sunday I’ve been at College Park with Raquel.  It’s been
fun!  Glad that school is starting back up.  Of course if
    there weren’t any classes…but yea.

While celebrating Sarah Espinosa’s b-day we went to see Brokeback Mountain
at the Majestic.  Yea, It was a great love story and very
touching.  Doesn’t matter that it was between gay lovers.
The movie went past that and focus on the forbidden love.  Great
acting by everyone, especially Heath Ledger.

I felt bad for sorta tricking my friend Wei.  He actually hasn’t
heard of the movie and all i told him before hand was that it is a love
story…and it has cowboys haha.  He seemed very uncomfortable
with the love scenes between the guys.  heh hey, we see girl on
girl action all the time, i’ll let the girls have at least this one .

Go see this movie sometimes…see how it affects you.
    —————————————————————————————
All the guys that I was rooting for in the Australian Open have lost .  O well…I hope that either David Nalbandian or Marco Baghdatis can take it away from The Fed.
    or

On the women side…well I gotta go w/ Maria Sharapova or Martina
Hingis.  Justine Henin-Hardenne has already won enough and
Clijsters doesn’t seem confident enough to win.  I’m alright
    either way.

  • *edit*
SOOO…I didn’t help out today at the LEGOS competition thing at
UMBC.  Well, i did wake up at 6:30am.  I did go there.
However, I ended up bailing because they were sooo disorganized!
We were suppose to find a group among 40 groups to help out, but
because it wasnt preassigned or anything it was madness! I ended up
searching aimlessly for a group until i finally gave up and left.
O well, I dont think i woulda lasted all 9 hours w/ those middle
    schoolers running around

It’s ok, I spent a good portion of today teaching my brother how to
play ping pong instead.  Wow, he learn very quickly!  By the
time we were done he was hitting forehands and serves as fast and
consistent as some of the people in the gameroom i have played
with.  Ah, one day my apprentice will be greater than me….ok
    that sounded corny

    ok, that’s it for now
    *edit*

MMmmm Kate Beckinsale…o the movie was great too
If you liked the first movie you will definitely like this one.
It’s a very good sequel, w/ more action, gore, and Kate
Beckinsale!  Just as good as the first, if not more so.

O and I finally found that video for that parody of Kanye West’s Gold Digger called “Lot Thicker”.  Yea, I posted the lyrics a while ago…too lazy to find them again.

Tomorrow, I’m going up to UMBC to help out at the LEGO League State
Tournament.  It’s some techno thing for middle schoolers…eh,
should be interesting.  I’m suppose to just show groups around
campus and plug UMBC while I’m at it.  Should be alright…better
be since i have to get up there at 7:45am!

I need to get back into tennis again.  All the Australian Open
watching have made me crave hitting the balls around.  I need to
get into tennis shape again and hopefully I can be the best  I can
be for the tennis club season.  We’ll see….

  • *Edit*
OMG I just had the best feast ever!  My family celebrated Chinese
New Year a little early for my uncle, since he’s going back to
    China.

    Here’s what we had…

Crab, lobster, oyster, fish, chicken, and even more stuff later on!

    Literally 5 minutes later…

    nearly all gone haha.

My dad brought us this big bottle of Brandy along w/ the food haha.  I only had a little, mixed w/ sprite.

    ah, the effects of Brandy

Me and my little cousin.  She’s the only girl, out of 3 cousins
and my brother and I.  O yea, all of us are definitely gonna
hassle any boys that wanna get w/ her in the future .

    Ah sooo full now…

Sunday morning I ate at Oriental Manor before heading over to Columbia Ice

again, even w/ my busted up right elbow (thanks Lai ).  After skating i went w/ my family to Virginia for a baby shower.  Just hung out and ate basically haha.

Alright gonna go watch my Australian Open.  Who am I rooting for?

  • I just saw The Book of Daniel.  Yea, the show that’s been getting a lot of bad rap because the family is apparently too
dysfunctional.  Ok maybe that is true, but that’s not a bad
thing.  The show is very interesting with a lot of twists
throughout the show, enough to make me see it again next Friday.

The actors and actresses do a good job playing the parts.  The
Asian guy, Ivan Shaw, is a great character and seems like a big step up on asian
representation in the media…well, for the guys at least.  I’m
glad they writers decided to put him together with a white girl instead
of a traditional same race girl.  Yep, asian guys can get white girls .

    Psh, like her —>

Anyways, go check this show out!  Hopefully it doesnt get cancelled because it is pretty entertaining.

    ——————–
This is a great article.  Please check out some of the excerpts below.

From the Times article on being Asian-American:

    On initial assimilation:
Asians was different from the Jews, Irish and Italians who had landed
earlier. The Asian immigrants’ distinctive physiognomy may have made it
more difficult for them to blend in, but at the same time, their high
education and skill levels allowed them quicker entrée into the middle
class. Instead of clustering tightly in urban ethnic enclaves, they
spread out into suburbia, where they were often isolated.

    On “model minority”:
The inspiration for the notion of the “model minority,” the
generation’s members have been most recognized for their high academic
achievements, a reflection of their parents’ drive for a certain kind
of success. But that is only part of their story. Shuttling between two
worlds—and seeming to fit into neither—many felt as if “they had no
community,” says Chang-rae Lee, a Korean-American novelist who has
written about this generation’s journey. “They had to create
themselves.” In doing so, they have updated the old immigrant story and
forged a new Asian-American identity, not wholly recognizable in any of
their parents’ native lands but, in its hybrid nature, vibrantly
    American.

    On “forever foreigners”:
Asian Americans say part of the reason it is so hard to reach an
equilibrium is that they are seen as what sociologists call “forever
foreigners.” Their looks lead to a lifetime of questions like “No,
where are you really from?” As a teenager in the affluent and
overwhelmingly white Chicago suburb of Riverwoods, Ill, Vanessa DeGuia,
now 26, endured incident after incident that made her aware that others
regarded her as foreign, despite how her birth certificate read. One
classmate told her, “You’re my brown friend. You’re so exotic.” Another
came over for dinner, took a bite of a Filipino egg roll made by
Vanessa’s mom, spat it out and asked if it was made of dog. “I never
felt like I belonged,” DeGuia says. “Though I was born in this country
and English was my first language, I was always seen as a foreigner.”

    On belonging:
For kids—who by nature desperately want to belong—the feeling of
alienation can be so painful that they will do almost anything to make
it go away, to fit in. For years, Mark Hong, 31, shunned the only other
Asian kid he knew in Davenport, Iowa, and hung out with the popular—and
other than him, entirely white—crowd at school: the jocks. “I repelled
anything that was Asian because it represented everything that was not
cool at the time. Asians did kung fu and worked at Asian restaurants,”
he explains. That his Korean-born dad was actually an engineer at
Caterpillar had no effect on Hong’s teenage mind, which was focused on
one goal: “I wanted to be cool.”

    On “cultural awakening”:
“he social awakening often kindles a cultural one. Once in the return
part of the curve, many Asian Americans go from downplaying their
differences to highlighting them. In fourth grade, Akira Heshiki, who
grew up in Anchorage, Alaska, dropped out of the Japanese-language
school she attended each Saturday because she didn’t feel Japanese.
Instead she treasured the moments when her high school classmates told
her, “I always forget you’re Japanese.” But once at Oregon’s Reed
College, where more than 10% of the students were Asian American, she
    began to embrace her heritage.”

    On relationships:
Jhumpa Lahiri, author of The Namesake, a novel about Indian immigrants
and their U.S.-born son, has observed the struggles of Asian Americans
like Chang up close. “Asian kids are not just choosing a different way
of doing things,” she says. “They’re choosing an entirely different
[cultural] vocabulary. They’re dealing with oil and water.” Nowhere is
that incompatibility more deeply felt than in romance. Most
Asian-immigrant parents encourage their children to find partners of
the same ethnicity, and many of the kids see the advantages of doing
so. As June Kim, a Korean-American copywriter in Philadelphia who is
engaged to another Korean American, Shane Kim, sees it, “there are
certain things you don’t have to explain—cultural nuances, how our
families work, our roles within our families.”

    How very true…

  • Look what I just purchased:

    Sony Cyber-shot DSC-S90:

Perfect, just what I need!  Big LCD screen, relatively small, 4.1
megapixel, good photo quality, good point and shoot camera, sturdy
material, has one of the longest battery life (compare to digital
cameras that uses AA batteries), no problem with redeye, and I got it
for cheap:  just 130 dollars (normally cost closer to 200
dollars)!  Yea, I’m pretty happy .

    In order news:
The CSA Ice Skating Trip will be January 15th, from 1:30-3:30pm
Sorry to those who prefered the other time but more than 2/3 of those
that replied said this time was better.  Bring your free pass if
you have it from last time; otherwise bring about 9 dollars (cost of
admission and rental, plus some left over money for locker).
Don’t worry if you don’t know how to skate…you’ll get it .

  • Wow, it’s amazing how connected we are to everyone!

    First weird discovery:
My first good friend was this boy named Steve, whom we met at daycare
when we were 4.  When we were about 5-6 or so Steve’s family had
to move, so I never saw him again.  WELL…I have this other
friend named Terry Pham, who is the daughter of my mom’s friend.
Terry was looking at an old school group photo of her boyfriend when
she noticed that there was this one asian kid (who had a big
head).  Terry asked her boyfriend’s mom if she remembers who that
    boy was.  “O, that’s AlexSteve
and him use to be good friends in daycare.”  !!!!!!!  So
weird!  We actually bumped into each other one time in the mall
and we didn’t recognized each other because it has been so long!
    strange strange…

    Second weird discovery:
This morning I woke up and one of my mom’s friend was there.  I overheard them talking about her son, Andrew Ho .  Does that sound familiar to anyboy here?

So after she showed me a picture i realized that hey, that’s the guy Crystal Yu
went to prom with!  I then found out that my aunt and Crystal’s
dad share the same birthday, so they consider themselves to be almost
family.  So yes, my aunt knew Crystal before we met at UMBC.
Andrew’s mom also mentioned something about Stephanie Leung, Lai and Crystal Li, but I forgot what exactly.

BTW Crystal Yu, everyone seem to be very fond of you.  They keep telling me what a nice, smart girl you are…you’re definitely loved .

    One more minor discovery:
Apparently a lot of my parent’s friends and relative know who I am, even if I’ve never met them.  They have labeled me as “Big Mouth Chan’s son”.  Heh, go figure.

    From ebaumsworld.com:

    Job Interview Question
You are driving along in your car on a wild, stormy
night. You pass by a bus stop, and you see three people
    waiting for the bus:

    1. An old lady who looks as if she is
    about to die.
    2. An old friend who once saved your life.
    3. The perfect man (or) woman you have been dreaming
    about.

Which one would you choose to offer
a ride to, knowing that there could only be one passenger
    in your car.

Think before you continue reading. This
is a moral/ethical dilemma that was once actually
used as part of a job application.

You could pick up the old lady, because
she is going to die, and thus you should save her
first; or you could take the old friend because he
once saved your life, and this would be the perfect
chance to pay him back. However, you may never be
able to find your perfect dream lover again.

    **Which do you guys choose?**

The candidate who was hired (out of
    200 applicants) had no trouble
    coming up with his answer.

He simply answered: “I would give
the car keys to my old friend, and let him take the
lady to the hospital. I would stay behind and wait
for the bus with the woman of my dreams.”

    Never forget to “Think Outside
    of the Box.”
