  • Proving My Worth

    You know, I think I’ve had it too easy for some time. Since high school, I’ve always felt confident that I can do well on whatever I am responsible for. I still get challenged of course, but I know that if I focus and work hard, I will make it on top and please the people that count on me.

    At some point over the past couple of years, I either got too comfortable or I stopped trying as much. Maybe I’m still doing well to the casual observer, but doing well isn’t enough for my peers if we’re in an environment where excellence is expected. That’s where I am currently. I won’t go into specific details, but I’ll let my geek side show you what I’m dealing with. I’m going to use Hawkeye from The Avengers (the guy with the bow and arrow in the awesome gif below) to explain my situation.

    TheAvengers

    In case you don’t know much about Hawkeye, he is a regular (although highly trained and fit) human being that has exceptional aim with his bow and arrow. By himself, most people would probably be impressed by his abilities. Perhaps he has taken for granted how easy it is for him to do what he does, so he doesn’t feel the need to train hard anymore. Why not right, if he’s already getting the job done?

    Hawkeye later joins a team where each member is not only as strong as him, but more powerful in many ways. When he looks over at who he’s working with, he sees a technological genius inside a flying weapon, a demi-god, a respected super-human leader, and an unstoppable green monster. Sure, there’s another member that’s also human like him with comparable abilities, but that doesn’t stop the fact that Hawkeye is still in the company of pure excellence.

    Suddenly, Hawkeye’s abilities really pale in comparison. His other teammates may even start wondering if he belongs with them. For instance, they see that he’s limited by how many arrows he can hold and he’s more vulnerable than the others when facing the bigger enemies. They understand he’s pretty good at what he does, but they also can’t help but notice his weaknesses. Maybe even Hawkeye starts questioning himself. “Am I good enough? Can I be better?”, he asks. Assuming these thoughts motivate him, he starts pushing himself to be greater than he ever was before to show how truly valuable he is to The Avengers.

    So yes, right now I am feeling like Hawkeye in the situation I described here. I’m in a position where I must step up and work extra hard to show I am indeed worthy of my place. I may have made some careless mistakes before, and perhaps I didn’t give enough effort as I should have in the past, but not anymore. I hate letting people down, so that pattern is going to end. I KNOW I am capable to be a strong asset, and it’s time I show my peers who exactly they’re working with.

    I AM going to prove my worth. I guarantee it.

  • ASIAN DAD SAY…WHY NOT BE JEREMY LIN?

  • I think you are an exceptional human being, whom is worthy of that you seek. I wish you continued success in your endeavors.

  • I know you will work harder than everyone else and get it done. I know you can do it.

  • I can’t get my eyes off of Thor in that gif. That man is mighty delicious. ;D

    … Ah, there was text in this post! (Don’t worry, I read!)

    I think you’re a fine gentleman, but I wish you the best in your endeavours to make yourself better. :)

  • I can totally relate. This how I felt the first time I had sex with a model. But don’t worry, if your experience turns out anything like mine did, you will put in 2 hours of good solid, sweaty work, take a shower, take a low dose antibiotic for a few weeks, and it will all be over.

  • i think i’ve stopped giving a shit. i’ve done all i can and it was never enough. i’m a bit closer to rorshack(sp?).  I know what i’ve got, i’m just not convinced that it’s worth putting forth the effort any more.

  • Depending on the writer, his accuracy with his bow and arrow is either superhuman or the product of a shitload of training.

    Ah Marvel Comics, learn continuity plox.

  • I was actually touched by this. I have been going through a similar crisis of sorts and your post has opened my eyes and helped me resolve some personal problems. I feel the same way. I shall start working harder tomorrow.

    Thank you for writing this.

  • The phrase “Alone we are weak, together we are strong’ doesn’t just imply that we’re only strong as a team (with other people). But also what you mentioned. Competition or comparing ourselves to others helps drive us to be better. This is true in all aspects of life: work, love, friendships…etc. I’m guessing though, you’re referring to sports…or Tennis?

  • Just always remember to prove your worth to yourself, not to others. Small but significant distinction. :)

  • you are worth your salt

  • Yoink! Stole the GIF. :-X

    Happy Friday!

  • Good for you, man!  My advice would be to “show initiative” and “be proactive” – they’re pretty commonplace buzz words in the job market, but it’s what bosses really look for in their employees: effort.

  • I think you’d like the Hawkeye in the Ultimate Marvel universe.  When he runs out if arrows, he rips out his fingernails and flicks them through the bad guys throats.

  • Honestly, Hawkeye is my favorite marvel character. As for you, you will do fine as long as your effort is at typical RLT par.

  • You’re a great person in so many ways and I’m sure whatever you put your heart and mind towards, you will exceed it without a doubt

  • nah. step up, but no need to prove anything.

  • I’m so glad this didn’t turn out to be a story about being so happy with you are that you’re content with being mediocre. I absolutely feel that the desire to be exceptional and the will power to back that up is infinitely more important than the results. Tom Brady is the perfect example, as far as physical abilities goes he’s an average to below average NFL quarterback. What makes him one of the best quarterbacks, ever, is that his level of determination is indomitable, so he doesn’t know how to except mediocrity. I know from personal experience that you have a similar level of determination which is why you also deserve a place in that circle. Just make sure you focus on “what can make me better,” vice “why am I not as good as…” and you’ll be golden.

    BTW F the Giants and the Patriots! “Viva los Cowboys!”

  • @coolmonkey - HAHAHAA I was thinking that too….

  • to me, it kinda sounds like you’re just doing it for them. Not for yourself

  • I know what you mean. I was talking about this the other day, it doesn’t matter if you are not the best, as long as you are doing *your* best. I’m sure you will do great :)

  • hmmm….    if the others question your ability, just use your bow and arrow to hit one between their eyes…   that will teach them..  haha

  • Do it for yourself, not for others (=

  • You don’t need to prove anything to anyone. If you set your heart and mind to working hard and succeeding, your effort and skill will shine through.

  • I’ve seen your presentation, I know what you’re capable of, your the waterboy, do not try to outshine your masters. Know your place. Admit you are the weakest link.

  • I love how you used the cartoon as comparsion! Lol

  • I really liked the comparison.

    YOU CAN DOO EEET!!!

  • :) you’re awesome!

  • @CaKaLusa - Who’s Jeremy Lin?

    @armnatmom - I appreciate it =)

    @cal_islander - I got my work cut out for me. The others are quite good at what they do.

    @Cestovatelka - I like ScarJo in that gif myself haha

    @amateurprose - Wait…what??  http://i.imgur.com/360h3.gif

  • @iones_island - You know, I sometimes think I will get to that point eventually.  May be a good thing.

    @bloggicus_maximus - Have you watched the Avengers cartoon series on Netflix?  It’s not bad.  Hawkeye is pretty cool there.

    @ClashoftheTaiten - No problem. I’ve been meaning to write this for the past couple weeks.  It’s why I haven’t been updating much; been too busy working.

    @Dobserver - Not exactly tennis playing, but related to tennis yes

    @suuperstar - True.  The thing is, I think the others are right to judge me.  I’ve think I’ve been coasting lately when I really should be hustling.

  • @BenelliMan - But what if I like pepper?

    @Femme003 - Pretty cool eh?   I can’t wait until May.

    @crazygrampastuey - That’s actually what I was told too.  Sometimes it can be tough though, when you’re bogged down with administrative stuff.

    @coolmonkey - Wait, are you serious?  I must look that up.

    @sonychak - What makes him your favorite?

  • @Roadlesstaken – he has great leadership skills, super sarcastic, and the funniest out of the members. I mostly like him because he is sarcastic though.

  • @suefa_lee - Thanks, I now need to show that to others watching me

    @wyrdkismet - how does one step up without proving something?

    @Dayrab - I’m gonna be the very best, that noone ever was…

    @f5ye_angel5 - I say both.  I think they’re right in that I could try harder like I have in past situations.

    @doritos4breakfast - That’s what I was telling myself too when I start to realize wait a minute…I actually not doing the best I can.  Must change that!

  • @maniacsicko - I can always count on you for the most reasonable advice!  haha

    @babixling - I will!

  • @jumpthenfly - Yup, now I need to go do that.  Working hard feels good!  Downside: less blogging time

    @RulerofMasons - http://i.imgur.com/zS2No.gif

    @BaBiixJo - he’s live action here!

    @DrakonFyre - Thanks for the encouragement!

    @lovejennyy - one day I’ll be as awesome as you.

  • you know you’re always a lucky guy ((= So I guess if you think you’re not the best, you’re always best at everything anyhow :D :D <3

  • @sonychak - Did you watch the NetFlix series too?

  • @fabolousclown - Haha, I wish I had it THAT easy.  Alas like others, I need to put in the grunt work.

  • I think you can do it :)

  • @Roadlesstaken - salt n pepper? then you’re mighty good man http://youtu.be/8-WFNbMohTQ

  • Honey, don’t be too hard on yourself. I found out last year that if I’m comfortable, SOMETHING isn’t right. Like you, I value self-improvement. When I got hired at the VA as an intern, I wrote a post similar to this… It was time to prove my worth. My time to shine. =)

    The VA is a government facility that only hires the best. I, personally, felt like perhaps I wasn’t “worthy enough” to be there, and they were “giving me a chance.” However, (not to brag by ANY means), I’m at the top of my class, which SHOULD say something; but I always find room for improvement because nobody is perfect. This is especially at the VA where everyone is so skilled and trained in what they do. Perhaps you are in a similar situation.

    You got this, friend! Challenging yourself is never a bad thing, especially if it will lead to you advancing in a skill or in knowledge. ^_^

  • @Roadlesstaken - naw I actually read the comics.

  • There are folks who are into what they do for the long run. Some people have been practicing tennis when they were in elementary school. Other folks are just prodigies. They learn so quick and have a natural talent.

    Then there are the goal oriented folks. They did the survey, picked their choices and continue to strive in their field of study. Any skill that takes a while to learn, they put in the time to learn (no shortcuts). They keep an eye out for new skills to learn, they provide leadership when asked, and are an asset to the team.

    Look out for the team. Some decisions are bad for the team (the recent cut off of Planned Parenthood donation via Susan Komen group was a bad decision). Keep the long term goal in mind. Be networking to raise donations and allies. Strangely when the team does end, the skills are transferable to other areas.

  • Oh, Hawkeye. At least you’re not Captain America in this video: Captain America Uses Drugs

  • @emily_shannon - I appreciate it =)

    @oOo_itsJuJu - Good to know you’ve been through the same.  Yeah, I think this challenge will be a good thing in the end.

    @sonychak - Trade me some, yo

    @PPhilip - Good tips.  Will certainly keep them in mind going forward.

  • @laytexduckie - Haha, I swear we have the same taste.  That was one of my favorite Dorkly vids.

  • @Roadlesstaken - Hahah. My still all-time favorite is when the Koopa got the star instead of Mario.

  • You da man! Alex ‘Hawkeye’ Chan :D

    This is a good post (as always) and I wish you the greatest of luck.

  • Yeah, this kind of mirrors the experience I’ve seen a lot of people go through as they get into the real world. When you’re a kid, everyone is trying to make you feel good, so every little thing you do is praised and taken like “OMG you’re SO talented,” especially if you’re from a small town (like me) where there’s little competition. Then you get to the Real World of Adulthood and there’s a bazillion people who don’t give a crap about you and are actually pretty damn awesome in their own right. And suddenly you think, you’re really NOT that awesome. O.o

    But you have the right idea, step up and get better. I like your comics analogy. :)

  • You go, boy.

  • @Roadlesstaken - it’s definitely not, you do not want to get to that point. it isn’t a confident “I know i have what it takes” not give a shit, it’s a “I know no matter what it isn’t good enough so why the hell bother” kind of give a shit. I hope you never even come close.

  • @Roadlesstaken - doing it without taking into account what someone wants you to be.

  • @Roadlesstaken - I’m sure it will be. You TOTALLY got this, friend! And you always do well with challenges. =)

  • Thoughtful post, Alex.

  • Tase all dissenters and critics.

  • @laytexduckie - Dorkly is underrated.  So many clever vids.

    @SaintBlue1131 - Thanks man.

  • @leaflesstree - Big pond time for this fish!

    @MzKeekz - you go girl

    @RestlessButterfly - Been meaning to post this down.  Been so busy these past two weeks trying to work hard.

    @ShimmerBodyCream - I like the way you think, like insanity wolf.

  • great post man. i think challenges are what set apart the talkers from the doers. show them who’s boss. go alex!

  • @bengozen - Thanks, I hope I can!

  • U GO, BRO!  honestly, many of us feel this way many times in our lives.  this by no means a weakness, though.  it just means you are aware of your surrounding and how you fit in with the rest.  i’d say, better to know than not having a clue at all.  this way, at least, one feels the need to be better, thus have a better chance in becoming a better and worthy person.

  • @rudyhou - I wish I had known sooner!  I’m ready to make some changes.

  • You must set some pretty high standards for yourself.  Good for you.  I’ve found that the skills and traits that got me to one job may not be the same ones that will land you the next job.  It’ll be things like networking, getting a better understanding of the business needs and pains… stuff like that.  Good luck Alex.

  • @ElusiveWords - Thanks. I’m a little bit more fired up now in my ambition, so that’s at least one good thing from this.
