Frickin’ Heelys! Never Again!
I usually don’t hold grudges, but I make an exception for Heelys. You know, those shoes that have wheels on the back that seem to have gotten popular over the past few years? Yeah, I used to own a pair when I was a sophomore in high school 9 years ago. I’ll admit I enjoyed them then, but that all changed drastically on a fateful October day in 2002.
I still remember it vividly. It was an overcast day as I headed over to a neighbor’s house to give them something. As I approached the street I began using my Heelys to skate over, like I’ve done successfully numerous times before. I would have again this time had it not been for one tiny barrier.
This stupid pebble somehow lodged itself in the wheel of my leading shoe, which managed to completely stopped the wheel from rotating instantly. I’ll let Sigmund Freud (yes, you read that correctly) reenact what happened to me next:

BAM!I faceplanted the ground so hard that I actually recall my face bouncing back up before finally crashing back down. I felt like I blacked out for a few seconds before I slowly got back up. Disoriented, I looked at my reflection off a nearby car’s window to see that my face was covered with blood mixed with dirt and pebbles. To top it off, I soon found out a significant part of my front tooth was chipped off during the impact. Ouch!Thankfully, noone was around to witness the beating the ground gave me. I went back home to clean my face up before passing out on my couch. I would have just called it a day right there, but there was one problem; I already promise some friends I would go to my high school’s homecoming game that night. Urgh.
I kept my word and went out, despite my face looking all busted up. I left early though, not because of the pain but because I was tired of all the questions and stares from everyone. I was pretty nasty looking, so I can’t really blame them.
That was the last day I wore Heelys and I don’t foresee myself setting my feet in a pair ever again. Good riddance!

I don’t have enough balance to ever attempt Heelys. Thankfully that beautiful face of yours wasn’t ruined in that horrific accident ;]
That sounds awful.
That totally sucks. Luckily you’re not disfigured because of the fall. I’ve never own a pair of Heelys because I simply can’t even balance or walk properly with that.
Damn Heelys! I remember them though, I had a pair and they were my favorite! I wore them everywhere, I thought I was SO cool Hahahah
ive never worn those before. i dont think i could balance in them. i totally see why you stopped wearing them. that would have scarred me for life.
…Ouch! That sounds SO painful! I remember trying to learn how to roller skate numerous times and ended up bruising my tailbone. That’s nothing compared to this, though. Ironically, I found ice skating much more easier.
However, I do like how the Rock Band drum set is conveniently placed in the background. =)
ouch? that sounded pretty brutal…
too bad you couldn’t lay claim to an epic bar fight for your injuries at that age :p
i had the same experience with razor scooters
I always wanted to try those but by the time they were popular in my area, I was really too old for them. Now I can tell myself that I didn’t miss out on anything. Hehe.
~V
What an experience!
You could have skipped that game night! You had a reasonable excuse
ouch.. at least no one saw.
@sonychak - Me too. I almost faceplanted, but I was able to throw my arm in front of my face before falling… so now I have this big scar near my right elbow.
So part of your tooth was chipped off? Did you get that fixed? I’ve never noticed anything wrong with your teeth.
@AlluringAddiction - Or perhaps it was magnificent before that day and now it has been downgraded to beautiful? Yeah?
@vicdaily - Hence my hatred of Heelys ever since!
@Candilicious_Meanie - It is kinda awkward walking around in them with the wheels. You almost have to walk with toes touching the ground first.
@stephx4 - Me too! Skating around the mall was fun. Now I’m annoyed when I see other kids do so haha
@HeLLo_Bianca - It was a good thing I stopped then. It is a little annoying to see other people use them around me nowadays. I’m getting old!
@Roadlesstaken - I wouldn’t doubt it.
@oOo_itsJuJu - I was waiting for someone to mention the drums. They were leftovers from my New Years Eve party. I still need to remember to take them back to my parent’s house sometime.
@sonychak - You fell on your face and chipped your tooth too?
@TheMarriedFreshman - You sure did not! Lucky you.
@nov_way - Memorable alright!
@randaness - I could have, but I promised and it’s hard for me to break promises, you know?
@H0Eass - I’m glad I didn’t tell my neighbor to wait for me outside haha. Oh yeah, I never did deliver her the thing I was gonna bring…
@fLiPgUy31O - I got it filled so it looks good as new! Remind me in NY to show it to you.
@Roadlesstaken - naw just fell on my face and harmed my cheek and knee in front of older kids. it was embarrassing.
@Roadlesstaken - Lol, of course I saw the drums, Alex! I’m a video game girl! How did they fix your tooth?
So, THAT’S what hap… Er… Hai, Alex! It was probably a good move to lay off the Heelys.
i have always hated the people who wore them and wheeled on past me. JUSTICE.
@oOo_itsJuJu - They filled it with some tooth substitute or something, I guess similar to what they use to fill a cavity? It looks normal now, so that’s all I care about!
@Automaton_Emotion - My extreme Heelys days are over
@sumoneoverthere - Oh I would agree with you now!
Dear Alex,
I’m committed to doing the blogathon too. I got some nice feedback during my last Internet Island topic too. My thoughts are that it should be easier to navigate Xanga than at any time previously, now that any entry with enough readers to give at least 6 comments and three or four recommends makes it immediately to the front page. (Kinda like when Xanga first started, and everyone on the service “knew” each other.
Oooh, You did a “blogathon” graphic. One does not appear on John’s entry, so I will assume your creative self made it. I will of course steal it for tomorrow’s entry on my site.
I’ll respond to this entry of yours with a short story. My ex girlfriend Liz (whom I “met” on Xanga coincidentally, back in 2005!) put on a pair of roller skates once outside her office building, got caught in a crack on the sidewalk, and subsequently broke her leg. (I like to invite her out to go skating every chance I get. Always gets the deisred scornful look from her.)
You fared much better. I didn’t even realize people older than 8 or 10 used these “heely” shoes.
Michael F. Nyiri, poet, philosopher, fool
you wore Heelys in highschool? I thought they were more for elementary/middle school kids haha
. I dislike Heelys myself because I see kids come into the dental school with half of their tooth missing and I say to myself…”WHY would your parents even buy you these things! you kids are already reckless when you play, no need to make you anymore accident-prone!”
Awww. That must have hurt. Ek, I’m glad you’re okies though, and still alive!
I never liked those shoes..because this could happen or worse. I already have horrible balance on my feet, and seeing those shoes get popular..I skipped out on them. The Sigmund Freud gif is kind of funny. Glad it wasn’t more than a tooth and a bruised face. It could of been worse…
Sigmund Freud faceplant, ftw!
haha. I think we need a picture. I am pretty sure people took some pictures of you at the game that night.
Lol no pics?
@baldmike2004 - That image actually came from edlives’ post. I asked him if it was okay to use first, which you could do as well just in case he has any issues with it. Yeahhh, I agree that older people should not be wearing these haha. What can I say, I was a dumb kid.
@DiemxSum - Oh they are, hence why I’m a little embarrassed to admit I wore them early high school haha. Yup, I was apparently one of those reckless kids!
@throughsamseyes - Gonna take more than gravity and the ground to stop me!
@Hinase - Definitely. I think the majority of the impact was on my tooth actually haha, so I guess I should be thankful it wasn’t my forehead or something.
@LauraG_0929 - I’m surprise noone has asked why I have a Sigmund Freud action figure haha
@miss_dizzao - It has been soooo long that I wouldn’t even know where to start finding those pictures. If they exist, I would destroy them!
@wutuwaitn4 - At the time digital cameras weren’t readily available, so nope! I still remember the image of my face and broken tooth though in my head.
@Roadlesstaken - So…why the heck do you have a Sigmund Freud action figure?
No, but really, I didn’t know you made the gif. I thought you just got it offline or something. =p
hahaha…I remember going and visiting my Dad at the ER where he worked…every single last employee would be cursing Heely’s Because about every child that ever came in had broken bones from skating with them. haha My father never let me have them because of this. My mom caved and got my sister some. She never used them but maybe once or twice and wasn’t allowed to wear them when visiting our father. haha.
@Roadlesstaken - Haha, well I’m happy that you’re happy!
@ALovingAdversary - They are an evil invention. EVIL!
@LauraG_0929 - Yup yup, after I found this gif making site I love making them whenever possible!
@Roadlesstaken - I have to agree. You fell pray to it.
I’d kill myself if I wore those.
@ALovingAdversary - I was a sucker!
@Randy7777 - Yeah, save yourself the trouble of finding out first hand and just trust me when I say avoid haha
@Roadlesstaken - ;) You’ve learned for when the next devilish contraption is made not to fall for it.
My brother ran me over with a bike by accident. hoooweee
@CaKaLusa - That would explain some things =)
That’s awful!
I’m always reluctant to ice/roller skate out of fear that the same thing will happen to me.
LOL you got heelys! so odd beans!
@Roadlesstaken - lol – will do
@xiaosnowtenshi - with iceskating I’m afraid I’m going to fall down and while my hands are on the ground somebody accidentally skates right over them =O . Haha, should I have told you that?
@s_h_a_sha - I HAD Heelys before. No more!
daaamnnn. That sounds nastyy. I had a similar fall except it was with a scooter. I slid down a good part of the hill on my chin, flipped over and don’t really remember the rest. later I found out the patch of psoriasis I had on my knee was ripped off, and my face was pretty messed up. Had to be the worse wipe out of my life. I can look back and laugh now, but it was pretty bad.
@Roadlesstaken - still that such unmanly shoes hahaha
@Roadlesstaken - Haha, I hear that!
http://laurag-0929.xanga.com/743163395/oh-hi/
@Roadlesstaken – Yeah, it could of been worse. But yeah, didn’t know they made sigmund freud action figures lol
Ouch, that seem horrifically painful…
i was always jealous at ppl who skated past me in school hallways. they’re just shoes with wheels, big whoop. *still in denial*
Ouch! What happened with your tooth? Did you get it capped?
Reminds me of an episode of Spongebob… http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5DtrfRSeoQs , the accident turned you beautiful!
btw, i also think you look a lot like this guy… or he looks a lot like you? http://a3.sphotos.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash1/31853_414235316016_644241016_4787061_4288623_n.jpg
that’s why I as afraid to get them…that and my horrible balance and coordination =D
o_o
i would have stayed home and cried. well, no. i would have gone to the hospital, then gone home and cried. one time i scraped my nose while exfoliating (the whole “beauty is pain” thing kept me from stopping even though my nose was hurting like crazy) and i had this HUGE scab on my nose for five days. thank goodness it was a long weekend. but hey! you learned your lesson! :p
Fail!
If Hollywood makes a biopic about your life, the Scientologists should find a way to bring Freud back just so he can play your part in the film.
And the whole project would be sponsored by Heelys.
These shouldn’t even be legal.
Interesting story, Alex. Glad you weren’t injured more significantly. I’m frequently irritated by young people using them in public places like malls. Just seems like the potential for running into someone or something is quite high.
I could never understand those shoes lol….
@LillyVRose - I laugh when I look back too. It’s just funny how messed up we got from something so stupid!
@s_h_a_sha - you see me rollin’, you hating!
@Hinase - Me neither, until my professor showed me his and I found one in SF!
@LauraG_0929 - oh yeh! Gif yeh!
@llamalima - It was more disorienting than painful, at least at first. My tooth hurt a lot though. I can feel my nerves!
@suuperstar - did you trip them? You did, didn’t you?
@Lynn1013 - Is that what you call it? They did something to make it look good as new again!
@eatandrant - Ehh, I’ve seen closer look-a-likes haha. Who’s he?
@Cucumber_Melonhead - Yeah, I had to practice in the store for some time before I got the hang of it. Tricky, but it did feel good when you finally pulled off a successful roll.
@eomona - Hospitals, psh! We’re young and invincible right?
@oxyGENE_08 - truth
@drung888 - You have quite the creative vision there.
@whoaitsanita - they should be banned!
@christao408 - Exactly. At the time I didn’t think too much of the consequences, but now when I see people use them I get annoyed.
@a_drunken_cellist - like understand how they work?
my cousin broke her leg on those…
on the second day of her 3 week vacation in austrailia.ahahahha
@ordinary_gir1 - How in the world did she break her leg?? Did it get trap somewhere while her other leg took off?
@Roadlesstaken - It’s still pretty awesome…think of the things you could do with it..Lol
@Roadlesstaken - like on a rock or something like that.
what a great vacation
@Roadlesstaken - WOW RLT I AM OFFENDED. do i look like an evil kid to you??
and no of COURSE i never tripped them, i just always dreamed of it! (see, SO NOT EVIL. ahahahahha btw that was sarcasm)
@suuperstar - Fine, if you don’t trip me when we meet up I’ll believe you. Deal?
@Roadlesstaken - Ill think about that, considering my options at the moment.
@suuperstar - Wow, you really are evil! I’ll make a note on that.
Is your front tooth still chipped to this day?
@karen0z - It has been filled in, so good as new!
@Roadlesstaken - well i guess it’s just the chubby cheeks hehe. it’s just my friend’s brother
@Roadlesstaken - Watch your back.
You need to reenact this in your next video. Or better yet, get your brother to do it (not a real face plant on the road).
Awwhh! Well it looks like you got your chipped tooth fix! =) I never wore heelys for that simple reason, I was afraid of falling flat on my face. Anyways, I love the little reenactment. It made me laugh, but I do feel your pain though.
@ElusiveWords - You masochist! …I’ll consider it.
@suefa_lee - I suppose I could have gone around life with that chipped tooth, but I don’t think it’s quite attractive for the ladies haha
Youch
when I was younger I like begged my mom to get me a pair of heelys, she said no so I tried someone elses and due to my complete lack of grace I fell and rolled lmaooo
I never wore heelies for two reasons: 1. I can’t skate and 2. I don’t think they make em in my size. Oh well.
sounds wild!
I wanted a pair, but knew that I would probably have an incident like yours lol.
….I loved my Heelys! Nearly got myself killed a few times, but the feeling when you’re rollin’ past all the lame ol’ boring walking people? Pretty darn priceless.
xo’
@jellyfishchild - Did you get hurt much? When you said roll I pictured you gracefully breaking your fall haha
@Rob_of_the_Sky - Oh they probably do, or at least they did when I bought them a long time ago.
@mrsclark11 - Yeah I wouldn’t recommend getting them haha. Just go all out and get rollerskates/blades instead
@preskinny - Until one of them trips you =O!
@psychonrm12 - I had to walk around with a chipped tooth for a couple weeks. Not fun, especially when eating and your nerves are all sensitive!
LOL they are quite evil.
Ouch… T_T I want to cry lol. When I was young I want the shoes because I want to skate in shopping centres. hahaha
@AmeliaHart - Burn them!
@Got_Claws - malls are probably one of the easier place to use those shoes! Nowadays I’m annoyed by all the kids that skate around me haha
@ItIsAllGravy - hey doughboy, your wife know about you cyberfucking summer yet? how about you masterbating to other blog friends? most of xanga knows. perhaps she does too and doesnt give a shit in which case its none of my beeswax and i apologize. you accept?
@yappayappayow - Hi Elizabeth/Explosive!
Ouch… that sounds very bad. I hope you were able to get the urgent help you needed… erg I can’t imagine the impulse when your face crashed with the side walk. >.<
@GothicChic13 - I think most of it the impact was concentrated on my front tooth, hence how it got chipped off haha
LULZ I was just thinking about these the other day. They are pretty handy when you’re too lazy to walk and too heavy to fly.
@mandyman27 - I suppose when you put it that way they could be useful, but I’d say just commit fully and go with rollerskates or something!
@Roadlesstaken - i got skinned my knees pretty badly lololol but thats about it
Always wanted one of those, but never got one. Apparently too dangerous for me haha.
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX - Good for you, avoid!
It won’t have effect in actual fact, that’s what I suppose.
