I’m Not Famous (At Least Not Yet)
During my New Year’s Eve party, I invited a friend from graduate school that was unaware I blog. That is, until a certain girl (THANKS) started talking to him about me and expressed surprise when she discovered he didn’t know about my supposedly “celebrity” status. A couple other Xangans soon chimed in, confirming what she had said and adding that I was a ladies’ man that can have a pick of whoever I wanted due to my popularity, or something equally ridiculous as that (DOUBLE THANKS).
Whoa whoa whoa! Overhyped much?
I proceeded to deny what they said about me, or at least explained that they were gross exaggerations. I never saw myself as a celebrity because I truly believe I’m not anywhere close to that status yet. For example, I don’t get recognized on the streets (although I’ve noticed some suspicious looks…) nor do I have fans scrambling to get my autograph or a piece of my hair.
See Andre Agassi over there being swarmed? Now THAT’S a celebrity! I’m only a lowly scrub. Weh!!Instead I see myself as, at most, a well known blogger on this one particular site. I didn’t purposefully aim to become one; it just sorta happened. Once I found out that there was community here I started interacting and commenting around on people’s pages. Eventually I found myself with a nice network of friends/viewers through those back and forth conversations. There was definitely no expectations to become famous or whatever. Honestly, I enjoy interacting with cool people, getting to know them, and creating connections with them and vice versa. It’s how I try to be in real life too, which explains why during college I had a similar reputation of knowing a lot of people.
I have to admit though, the idea of being a celebrity is appealing. Despite all the downsides that come with it, I think it would be exciting and fun to be recognized by people in that way. I have often times daydreamed about how it would come about. Maybe I’ll get discovered online and be like one of those YouTube stars that have millions of fans/subscribers. Maybe I’ll get my 15 minutes of fame by appearing in a commercial or as a background character in a show/movie. Maybe people will recognized me if I ever work along side tennis players on the professional circuit. Being famous isn’t something I’m actively striving for, but it is fun to think about the possibilities. I’m content if that’s not meant to be, but I would certainly not mind it if it ever becomes a reality.
So long story short, I want to debunk the idea that I’m any type of celebrity at this moment. A well known guy? Sure! However, that’s about as far as I would go. In the end, I’m basically just like everyone else on here.

Sorry, my personal assistant is rushing me out of my mansion. I forgot I have to fly out to France in my private jet ASAP to attend this awards banquet where they’re giving out complimentary diamonds to all those in attendance, or something like that. I better hurry over to the limo that’s waiting for me! Hopefully I can avoid all those screaming fans I see outside my window. Eh, I’ll just have my bodyguards push me through.*

Celebrity has its price, Alex. The other day Tawn and I were eating lunch at a Japanese curry place across from an English pub when one of the drinkers at the pubs comes over to say hello. He used to live in the same condo Tawn and I did back then and after finding my blog as the top hit when googling the condo’s name, has been following the blog for the last five years and recognized us.

@Roadlesstaken - That was about three weeks ago and haven’t seen or heard form him since. Actually, he did introduce himself once about five years ago, shortly after finding my blog. He was in an elevator in the old condo that Tawn and I stepped into. But I didn’t recognize him these five years later. Not the first time I’ve been approached out of the blue by someone who saw me. And about a year ago, someone unknown commented on my blog that they had seen me at a nearby shopping center that afternoon. Stalkers! =D

I think the good thing about being a Xangalebrity is that Xanga is community-oriented and thus you can still keep in touch with your “fans” and there’s a lot of intelligent discussion. It’s a lot more democratic this way. (whereas Youtube celebrities can have way more fans but they don’t connect with many of them and also a lot of the viewers are mean trolls)

Hey love, I’m in front of an audience everyday..and it’s quite demanding…I tend to keep away from the autographs or the interviews,, BTW i’ m not a celebrity..just a college student with a few sprinkles of fans…:) ,,But, anywhoo….Recognition has it’s moments, but it’s kind of like sex.. it’s a momentary high..it can get old and boring, unless you change it up..so in conclusion..celebrity status doesn’t change..it’s the same energy, and audience each time…so honestly, live your life and appreciate the feeling of being YOU!!! It’s soo much better in the end..

@Roadlesstaken - I typed up a little review, minus parts of the plot and then asked them to guess what was going to happen by adding the missing parts. They read what they came up with. Then we watched the clip and if they got it right, they cheered and if they didn’t, they were sad. Really easy stuff such as, “There were two ____. The ___ turned into a ____.”
If you were here, you would feel famous because I can recognise people from the internet.

Eh, I think I probably wouldn’t do well as a famous person. I’m totally cool with being a famous author. Unless you get REALLY well-known, people don’t recognize authors the way they recognize entertainers or athletes. And even if you got to Stephen King status, I highly doubt you’d be mobbed. Nobody expects an author to steal the show on the red carpet, haha.
If I was an honest-to-goodness celebrity for something more in the limelight, I’d be the one with HORRIBLE candid shots plastered on the tabloids every other week talking about how fat I was, haha.

Being recognised by strangers certainly is a strange experience. I became a bit of a local celebrity when I worked at a grocery store in a trendy part of town. I’d be stopped in the street and people would say, “Hey! You’re Peter from that store. What’s up?”
A strange experience indeed. I’m modestly happy that I’m not famous any more.

@Roadlesstaken - I’m a singer… I mostly sing the traditional classical/Opera music..but..I am a rebel at heart, so I’ve changed up the genre a little bit..I merge genres such as, opera and rock, or jazz and electronica..I love it! It’s kind of my knack i guess.
I do act, My major in college is Musical theater….That’s always fun..and lastly dance..HA..I think i’d step over everyones toes as well as mine in a heartbeat…LOL….
Currently, I live in Chicago…so I’m just performing nowadays for classes or small groups within the chicago area..and doing backup for local artist..I’m currently working on my album and in the middle of planning a new production….I’m hoping that it come out as “Hotshit” But, we shall see

Remember fame does have it’s price and also it’s dark side. Though it’s good that even being well known here, that you are keeping yourself grounded to the earth and not letting your head get too big. I don’t want any fame, small or big or anywhere really. I don’t think it’s worth it really but if you can handle, go for it =D You’re still pretty cool despite being a xanga-celebrity and that’s good.
@Hinase - Yeah, I totally understand the down sides to being famous. However (whether naively or not) I feel that certain people can handle it better than others. I think I could, or at least the type of fame that isn’t overbearing.
@Roadlesstaken - You can. You’ve been handling this small type of fame quite well more than most people I know who can’t. As long as you stay being yourself..then you should be fine =D

It IS nice to be known by many people. I know it felt good when I’d be walking across campus and then every 30 seconds a person would see me and say hi, and it’d be a different person each time, and the people count would increase exponentially. This was years ago though. I’m such an unsocial hermit these days… just what my school turned me into. haha.

For some reason, I always get into messes, but I’m not ever acknowledged. I think it’s wrong. If people would just acknowledge and shame me for mess 1, mess 2 wouldn’t happen. I make messes. It’s about all I’m good at. I get called an attention whore, but I’ve never once been featured on xanga. Most people hate me and what I have to say, but they don’t want to add in their own advice. And what would you do? That’s my question. The internet is the only shield I have. I’m a vulnerable adult.
I think we should be protected somehow. She’s upside down or a bingle bot. Anything funny and to distract away.
I don’t vote and stuff because of it. I don’t want to have my number pulled, the used. How do you save in a recession? You know, we’re like mini-economies because we’re drugged, cared for and have very little money that goes straight back into our system. The only real problem is when we breed.
