  • MORE Food-Related Things I Think My Grandma Truly Believes

Wow, I have been away from home for far too long.  Either my tolerance with my grandma has gone down or she has gotten a lot worse when it comes to food.  About a half a year ago, I actually wrote down several beliefs pertaining to food that I thought my grandma had (Food-Related Things I Think My Grandma Truly Believes).  After spending time with her this past Thanksgiving break, I now remember several more I would like to add.

You must microwave ALL the leftovers, even if it’s only one person that’s eating.
I have to be careful what I wish for when I ask my grandma what’s there to eat.  If she leaves my sights, she will proceed to take out and microwave every single item in the fridge.  I keep explaining to her that I can just pick out what I want and heat it myself, but she apparently doesn’t think that approach makes more sense than what she’s doing.  Who cares if eventually everything gets overheated, right?

Temperature is beyond my understanding (part II).
You see, if it wasn’t for her I would not remember how to turn cold food into hot food again!  I’m oh so lucky to have her urgently remind me that the microwave exists during those times I grab food from the fridge.  Otherwise, I would foolishly be eating my food cold.  Close one!  Glad she catches me everytime before I make that tragic mistake!

If one person eats, everyone else in the immediate proximity will be hungry.
For example, if my brother decides to eat something at 3pm, my grandma will deduce that I am also hungry for that fact alone.  It doesn’t matter that she saw me eat a big lunch at 1pm.  Hunger is highly contagious!

Walking in or near the kitchen = you MUST be looking for a meal!
I’ve learned long ago to try to be extra quiet and sneaky when I walk through the kitchen or when I go grab a drink from the fridge while my grandma is around.  If she catches me in the act, I will be thoroughly interrogated by her as to what I’m doing, what I’m looking for, and what I need her to cook for me.

If you keep reminding someone to eat every 5 minutes, eventually they’ll cave in.
Unfortunately for me, this is actually true to an extent.  You ever heard the phrase that a broken clock is right twice a day?  After the 3924812 time she asks me if I’m ready to eat she will eventually hear that I am indeed hungry, thus reinforcing this cycle to go on.  Yay for me!

It is offensive to not eat rice with all my meals, no matter the type of meal.
You want to know an easy way to get a dirty look from my grandma?  Try eating fried chicken, a sandwich, pasta, pizza, or other foods like that near her after she has made rice in the rice cooker.  She will question you in a very annoyed, harsh manner as to the reasons why you’re not eating rice with what you’re currently eating.  Rice obviously belongs with every meal, so you better damn well grab some with that pizza!

Look, I’m glad she cares about me and all, but there comes a point where it gets really overwhelming.  I would say my grandma has most definitely pass that point.  I’ll try my best to keep on humoring her, but I would be lying if I said there aren’t numerous moments where I feel I’m THIS close to going insane.  Ahhhh!!!!  I suppose it could be worse.

Now, if you will please excuse me I hear my grandma calling out for me again.  Take a wild guess what it’s about.

  • hahahaha….  I think she found her niche in the family (aside from knitting sweaters).

You might have to sweet talk her or distract her.  Eg. if she is trying to feed you at 3PM, “you made a big lunch for me, I can’t eat now and I don’t want to ruin my appetite for your delicious diinner that you’re preparing.” (or whatever dish she is preparing).   You can try to distract her before you go into the kitchen when you are getting a drink.  “Oh look, my brother needs you.”

    Good luck.

  • lol my grandmother was always trying to feed me too. It was a whole different story when a guest came in though. She could care less if I ate lol

  • LOL cute grammy

  • Ahh, this sounds EXACTLY like how my grandmother was, except for the rice part lol. She grew up in Mississippi and was your typical southern grandmother…. On the holidays we were pretty much forced to eat SO. MUCH. FOOD. and she was happy to prepare all of it for us. :)

  • I wonder how she’d do if she came to have another hobby. She seems fixated. I wonder if she sees this as her “role” now, or if she takes pride in this one thing that’s turned into an obsession. From reading this entry, I imagine that she lives in the kitchen. Does she go out at all?

  • Sounds like my grandmother :D And everything for her has to have a ton of salt!

  • i love your grandmother! she’s so cute! hahaha. and yes, a meal is not a meal if there is no rice.

  • @ElusiveWords - Unfortunately for me she’s always in the kitchen knitting and watching tv =/  I can sneak by her if the tv’s loud though!

@LillyVRose - Really?  When guest comes it’s pretty much the same thing; she expects all of us to eat!

    @getyourownsandwich - …not yet…

@buiptammy - you can borrow her

@AmyC0987 - It does give her something to do when you prepares food.  Just too much grandma!

@sassyjessie - Yeah, it’s pretty much her role in the house.  She knits a lot too, but that brings other troubles haha.  She doesn’t really go out too much, although she tends the garden often enough.

@puella_sapiens216 - Oh that reminds me of something else my grandma does.  Instead of salt, she puts chicken broth mix in foods.

  • @eomona - I’m just trying to figure out how she expects me to mix pizza and rice together…

  • @Roadlesstaken - hahahaha. i ALWAYS eat rice with my pizza, believe it or not. my friends think it’s so gross, but oh well. it doesnt matter if we go out to eat and i ate a bunch of food, i’ll still want rice when i get home.

  • @Roadlesstaken - are you SURE you’re not hungry?  there’s some rice in the ricecooker.  i’ll heat it up in the microwaave for you.  but i won’t make you a sandwich though

  • OMG! My grandma does the EXACT same thing to me every time I visit her. Though she doesn’t get angry when I don’t finish my rice, but you should see how she gets when I don’t finish her miracle soup or if I tell her I didn’t drink any it. Or maybe you shouldn’t. Though it’s probably the exact same look your grandma gives you when you don’t finish your rice. HAHA..

  • What a nice early xmas present. So sweet of you Alex.

  • Hahaha she sounds just like my mom. Before I left for college she gave me a gallon-size Ziploc bag of basmati and said, “Don’t forget to take some good rice!” Let me guess….Does she make large quantities of food and freeze portion sizes for later “just in case?”

  • awww at least your grandma tries to feed you.  My grandma tells all of us that we need to stop eating b.c we’ll get too fat haha

  • @eomona - Seriously?  What do you do, put the rice on top of the pizza and then eat it?

    @getyourownsandwich - Aw, no sammy?  =(  Okay…

@sweetfaced_profanity - Oh gosh, not the miracle soup!  I’ve gotten in the habit of just saying no to all soup offerings from my grandma haha

    @buiptammy - I know, I’m too generous.

@Lynn1013 - What’s basmati?  Actually, she makes large quantities of food and expect me to eat it at every meal. That gets boring after a while though.

  • @Mad_Wife - Perhaps we should switch grandmas!

  • @Roadlesstaken - no, i usually eat the rice first, then the pizza, but sometimes i’ll put a layer of rice under the cheese. oh man, that sounded gross, lol. but it’s really good!

  • haha =) enjoyyy the food!

  • i miss my popo :(

  • Oh man, I totally understand that last point about having rice with everything. So what does my granny serve with her noodle stir-fry? Yep, a side of rice.  Carb overload!!  @.@

  • Oh, she sounds like a wonderful, caring person.  There’s no better way to show love than with a hot pan and a spatula.  Umm… something like that.

  • This was funny, but yeah, I think if this was me and I had your grandma, it’d be getting old FAST! I think that situation would be a total nightmare for me because I have a really small stomach and physically CAN’T eat a lot of food at a time so I always have to turn down food even if it looks good, or stop eating when there’s food left just because I get too full.

I remember growing up I had a friend who lived with her parents and her grandparents – they had recently immigrated from Romania. The grandma would force food on my sister and I like nobody’s business! It was terrible, and if we tried to politely decline you could tell we were hurting her feelings, we felt so bad.. not to mention there were  alot of cultural differences in the foods she would serve as “snacks” and we just didn’t like it.. that got to be really tricky. I remember one particular time, she served us bread that was light/whitish with a dark swirl in it – and I got excited because I thought it was cinnamon swirl bread! As soon as I tasted it I was HORRIFIED because she gave me several slices and it wasn’t anything cinnamon at all, at the time I had NO IDEA what it was (only that it tasted very bad to me) now I think it was some sort of like white bread with a pumpernickle swirl. That was a bad day LOL

  • Your grandma is funny … I think the majority of Asian grandparents feel that way. They are ‘traditional’ in the sense that, they, as children did not have enough to eat and now want their own grandchildren to fed all the time.

Whether I’m hungry or not, my mom WILL cook for me and I will have to eat it. It doesn’t matter if I answer ‘no’ to her ‘are you hungry?’ question … 15 minutes later she’ll call me to go eat whatver it is she made.

  • Wow idk if that’s an asian thing but my family believes in most of those things too esp the calling to eat every 5 mins … so ANNOYING though

  • ha she sounds super cute.

how do you eat rice and cereal together. lol.

  • haha. I wonder how much weight you’re going to gain by the end of next week, then.

  • @eomona - I’m really tempted to try that now, but then I’m afraid my grandma will see that and expect me to do it all the time haha

    @ThePrince - Don’t I always?

    @s_h_a_sha - =/

@drung888 - It’s not just a small cup of rice either.  It’s like she expect you to eat a whole plate of it each time!

@christao408 - Haha, if you say so!

@Fireflywishes - Trust me, this has gotten old.  There’s no reasoning with her either.  She’s just stuck with her ways.  Haha, sorry for your bad day.

  • is your grandmother cantonese? LOL.

  • Hahahahaaaa, the last part abt rice cracked me up.Your grandma seems very caring. Give her a hug next time & tell her to eat some rice w/ you! :)

  • Awh, grandmas…
My parents do the same thing about microwaving/heating food up.  But honestly, sometimes I prefer it cold, like cold pizza!  Well, I like it best fresh, but once it becomes left overs, I prefer cold. lol.

  • @babixling - Ah yes, my grandma would occasionally go right ahead and make the food too even before I finally say I’m hungry.  It’s during those times when I think what was the point of you even asking me then??

@ShimmerBodyCream - It’s funny writing it, but it’s soooo annoying in person!  Ahhh!!!

@hollywoodfever91 - I tried ignoring it.  Yeah, that doesn’t work haha.  She’ll just come up to me and ask louder thinking I didn’t hear the first time.

    @anonymiaous - I don’t eat cereal actually since I’m allergic to milk =/

@nov_way - Thank goodness I’m not at home as much anymore!

  • @jia_x3 - Why yes…how did you guess?

@HelloKitty0809 - Funny enough, she doesn’t like to eat much!  I occasionally reverse the roles and ask her repeatedly if she’s ready to eat, but she refuses.  Hypocrite!! =P

@phosphor_stars - Cold pizza is alright, but if I’m putting leftover on top of my hot rice I like the stuff warm

  • Ah yes, in that case yesss.  And brown rice is horrible not heated up; so I wouldn’t hesitate to nuke it. :D nom nom!

  • We must be related. We have the same grandma lol

  • Rice with pizza sounds pretty good. :D I’m going to try it next time.

  • Aww, food equals love

  • @ms_guided_youth - Oh no!  I’m sorry for you haha

@zoetik - damnit, I think I will too.  I gotta make sure my grandma isn’t around when I do!

@storyslut - Well, she must reeeeeeaaaaaaaaaalllllllllllllllllllllly love me then!

  • OMG. I feel you on everything except for the rice one. (that one is truly something I have never had the unfortune of encountering).

    I seriously think it’s  a Grandma thing.

  • @Roadlesstaken - sounds like something a cantonese grandmother or mother would do. just last weekend, my sister had to have breakfast before her saturday classes and my mom woke me up as well to make me eat breakfast at 8am when i could have slept in because she thought i was hungry.

  • @Roadlesstaken - Basmati is a Middle Eastern/Indian variety of rice. It’s a little pricier but doesn’t become sticky and gelatinous like some other types so it works for leftovers very well.

  • Haha. I love old people and their crazy beliefs.(:

  • gotta love grandma :) she always offers me FOOD.

  • Hehe! I know how annoying this can be, first hand. But, at the same time I think its also sweet and cute. I’m glad you’re grandma is still with you and you can still make these memories with her (even if they are annoying at times). :p

  • She sounds fun to mess with.

  • Haha, what a character.  Have you ever microwaved jello?  It turns back into liquid.

  • it’s so sweet! my interaction with my grandma is sadly limited as we’ve no common language of communication (she speaks either bahasa indonesia or a certain mandarin dialect, both of which i don’t speak too well)…

  • Hahahhaaa aww  she sounds like my grandma!! :D I know, it just gets so unbearable sometimes!

  • That’s probably the only way through which she feels like she can show her love (and you probably know that). Why not get her started on something else? Isn’t she the granny who also knit a couple of sweaters for you, too?

  • she’s trying to fatten you

my grandma does it to me too

  • LOL! Aww..I find your grandma rather endearing. :P Sounds a bit like my dad. When he eats, EVERYONE in the family must eat too. Doesn’t matter if you just had a feast 15mins ago, if he’s hungry, everyone’s hungry! -_-* I actually eat rice with fried chicken. Hmm..haven’t tried it with pizza yet though. Must give that one a try.. =P

  • there will come a day when yu would give everything yu own to have her doing all that crap for yu again….if that is the worst thing yu have to put up with in yur life, yu are forturnate…

  • How old is your grandma. She sounds like a darling!

  • @tialoca1313 - Nah not the worse, just a bit frustrating.

@Babieboo_Annie - I know it’s possible to eat rice with fried chicken, but when I choose to eat that I rather eat it the normal way without Asianfying the experience haha

@onlyFORaLILwhile - Seems like the goals of a lot of grandparents

@christykim - Why yes!  food and clothes for me are the two main things she does for me.  I glad for her, just wish sometimes food wasn’t the majority of our conversations.

@gvoxford - Yes!  Not too bad in the greater scheme of things, but enough that it can drive you crazy after a while.

  • @LoBornlytesThoughtPalace - She is around 80.  Still quite active for her age!  I can send you some pound cake she enjoys making every week.

  • @BingleBot - Feels good to hear others having the same experiences.  I’m not alone!

@TayCif - To think, one day we will be just like them =O

@aliceandrandy - After a while offering just becomes insisting haha

@ichifangirl - It’s great when my brother or parents are around too.  We all give each other this bewildered look haha

@the_rocking_of_socks - Yah, I admit I might have done that a few times.  Shhh!

@ItIsAllGravy - really?  I guess that makes sense, although that’s somewhat random.  I’m guessing you tried it one day?

@morningmoka - Ahh.  In a way my conversations with my grandma is pretty limited too.  I think 90% of our talks is related to food.

  • @Roadlesstaken - My grandpa is 82 and definitely from a different era.

  • LOL HAHAHAHA Sik jor fan mei ah, Alex? :D

  • She sounds like the typical loving Grandmother and you are blessed:)

  • haha. awesome post. totally can empathize with that.

  • The last part: my grandma will get upset as well if you don’t eat HER rice.   Oh, grandmas – gotta love ‘em.

  • Oh and most grandmothers have the eyes that says you have lost weight, I must feed you right now before you starve to death….

I have learned a new line to make women around me happy: “you look like you have lost weight….”

  • She sounds like Jewish or Italian grandmothers too, reminds me of my grandma (  RIP), and I would adopt her.

  • @grannyinboxers - Yes, I suppose so =)

    @bengozen - I wonder if we’ll be like that when we’re older?

@Keeko1 - Yep, that’s pretty much the same case here.

@PPhilip - Haha, yes that line does go over quite well.

@inthenameofwater - I’ve heard other Italian users say the same thing about their grandmas too.  Interesting!

  • Haha. My Grandma used to do the same thing. <3

  • ROFLOL! This seriously made me laugh out loud. :) It was great seeing this through your eyes. Thanks for sharing. Sorry for your misfortune. *hugs* Guard your hunger. ;)

  • @akarui_mitsukai - I think I’ll be alright.  Haha, just right now I had my grandma, my aunt, my other grandma, and a family friend each asked me to eat all within a few minutes of one another.  Ahhhh

  • My Grandmas are always trying to make me eat! Haha

  • Thanks for the laugh. :D

I particularly agree with “If she doesn’t mention food, I will forget to eat.” My mother only asks me this about 3 times during every phone conversation.

  • @xLove_Me_Alwaysx - Oh no, so your mother does that to you too?  My mom hasn’t gotten to that point (yet!)

  • If anything, you’ll be like. Grandson, stop using your wrist when hitting your forehand! It hurts me more than it hurts you to watch you do that! =P

  • Ahaha the typical life of an Asian grandchild. I love it :)

  • @x_onholiday - Do you reallllly now? haha

  • Ahahahahahhaha the rice thing is so true. Rice is perfectly fine for breakfast, lunch, & dinner!

  • My grandparents are the same way!  I love to eat cold leftovers and they used to grumble about that a lot and tell me that I would get salmonella or something.

  • must say that that’s cute and totally insane.

i can just picture an old asian lady hassling you down about whether or not you’re hungry:Pmmm….rice with a sandwhich…or rice with pizza….mmmm…sounds yummy to me but then again, i’m a total rice bucket

  • Totally like mine!

  • wish i had one of my grandmas with me now…i’m glad you have such a caring one!

  • @suuperstar - It’s okay for breakfast, but I rather eat something else since I’ll probably be eating rice later on that day haha

@pax_intus - Yeah, it’s their way of trying to scare you into following them.  My grandma would say the same thing if I make my eggs runny.

@sabbygurl - I love rice as much as the next person, but I like some variety too!

@jtqueenbee30 - My other grandma lives in the same neighborhood as me too, but since she doesn’t live with us her food tendencies isn’t too bothersome.

  • @Roadlesstaken - i was just joking, i’d hate having rice for breakfast or lunch LOL

  • Ha, I love grandmas! You are lucky to have her! Didn’t you know she’s just following the Grandma Handbook? This post is funny and sweet!
    HUGS!

  • hahahaha…I think this is all grandmothers.   One grandmother insists to always have a glass of milk or water with my meals or snacks…oh lord and butter goes in everything. D:  The other one always insists on tortillas to go with every meal or snack.  If I do not have them on my plate or in my hand as I am walking out of the kitchen I get dragged back or hunted down.  There’s a radar that goes off, I swear.  I know your pain.

  • Alex is awesome! Thanks for indulging my rapid-fire interrogation.  I am lookinig forward to writing about the stuff you talked about.  And! finally got a webcam… (if only I can find more time). Anyone has any extra time rattling around in thier pockets?

  • @adamswomanlost - There’s a handbook?!  Must destroy it!  haha j/k

@ALovingAdversary - Seems like you do.  I’m having random memories rush back in after reading what you wrote =P

@Linh_L - No problem, eager to see what you’ll write.  Yay, now you can do XZ!

  • My grandmom has never believed like these. She wants me to eat much more due to Chinese belief that man should be a bit chubby and I am lower weight. I always eat the whole day when I am with her.

  • She probably thinks microwaves are a marvel of technology and just likes being able to how to operate it! Thus, she finds an excuse to use it a lot. :) On the bright side, if you work out a lot, then this should be good at helping you build muscles?

  • @rioinbangkok - That must make her happy.  I sometimes purposefully make sure she sees me eating so she doesn’t have to worry if I had ate that day

@AzureRecollections - I’m in the process of working out more haha.  As far as the microwave goes, I wish she knew how to pick more appropriate heat settings.  She always nukes food for like 3-4 minutes, no matter how little food there is!

  • LOL!  Your gma is funny!

  • @JL789 - Funny and obsessive with food!!  XP

  • me: “ugh I’m so full, I think I’m done eating”
grandma: *puts more food on plate* “have some more”

    me: “………? “
there’s no way of escaping grandmas… lol

  • @xxLilPauliexx - Oh there is…by physically getting away from her!

  • hahaha grandmas are funny like that.

  • I still think you should write a sitcom screenplay about her!

  • ha… i totally agree with the “must be hungry if walking near kitchen ” one. although on the top of my mind, I guess I can’t really think of any reason to walk into the kitchen if i’m not hungry @_@!?!!?!

    xoxo hitomineko xoxo

  • @CareyGLY - My brother and I did think about doing a short skit where my brother would impersonate her as we play out one of the many common scenarios with her haha.

@hitomineko - Ever go to the kitchen just to get a drink?

  • It’s a Chinese thing… my mother is that way, and so is my mother-in-law. LOL  One foot even near the kitchen area, and it’s food time.
I’ve told my husband, stop bringing any more food from his parents.  Not because I don’t love it (which I do) but it wrecks havoc with the food I have already prepared for the week!  (And I’m out of room in the fridge.)

  • @Femme003 - Haha, well one thing for sure we won’t ever go hungry!

  • Never had that happening too much to myself. But it seems like she cares for you a lot..and loves you as well. Maybe just a whole lot. Lol

  • @Hinase - Yes, it’s quite overwhelming

  • Your grandma sounds like my mom
