Want to help me remember my birthday?

I will be turning 24 on March 1st, this coming Monday (yuck, I know). When I think back to my birthday last year, I can’t remember much. Nothing comes up immediately to mind, which bothers me. I had to look back at the entry I wrote last year to remind myself that nothing really celebratory happened. My parents apparently took me out for dinner, but my friends didn’t do anything for me. I actually wrote that I didn’t mind it, but honestly… I kinda did. I didn’t want to sound selfish, but I was hoping for my friends to do something for me like we’ve done before for our other friends that had birthdays over the years. Alas the message didn’t go through. (Update: Actually, I just remembered I DID go out for lunch with friends a few days later. Whoops! Man, I’m losing my memory with age XP)
When I think about my favorite birthdays, they all involved my closest friends taking time out to make my birthday feel like it was the most loving day of the year. A couple of years ago, my closest friends from high school and college all found time to have dinner with me at a fancy place in Baltimore, which meant a lot since it was a bit out of the way and expensive. During my freshman year of college, my different group of friends all threw me individual birthday celebrations. Basically, I ended up having a birthday week, with each day being hosted by a different set of friends. Needless to say, I had a big smile on my face that whole month.
In the end, my top favorite birthday has to go to my 18th birthday, when my high school girlfriend threw a surprise birthday party for me. As I walked into a friend’s house, she somehow managed to get all my closest friends to pop out and ambush me. They proceeded to shoot silly string all over me as I fell to the ground in shock, completely covered in colorful crap (hmm, that doesn’t sound quite so wonderful from the way I wrote that). Believed me though, I was extremely appreciative that everyone went through all that trouble just for me. Oh how I miss feeling that cared for by my friends. With everyone’s schedule nowadays, I’m not sure if I’m going to experience anything like that anytime soon.
Anyway, I really don’t want my birthday this year to be as forgettable and unimpressive as last year, so I was wondering if some of you would like to help me out. I was thinking between now and my birthday, would anybody want to highlight my birthday by sending me shout outs, maybe in picture/audio/video form? Perhaps, something like this:

This year on my half birthday I convinced my roommates that it was a worthy occassion to go out which was pretty awesome. (I have some great roommates). Anyway, I’m sorry you’ve had some unmemorable birthdays and I hope this year is an awesome birthday for you! And gosh, 24, you’re so old! Ha, I kid. I’m not too far behind

I know exactly what you mean. Sometimes, it’s just not justified for the birthday person to plan his/her own birthday. It doesn’t have to be a surprise, but having some people take the initiative and plan a simple night out makes the birthday person feel warm and fuzzy. Ohh I know how you feel. My worst birthday was my 16th. I recieved hardly any gifts from my friends, and all I did was have dinner with my boyfriend at the time and my parents. Plus me and my ex had nearly broken up earlier that day. How depressing.

I know how it feels. My closest friends have forgotten about my birthday for three years straight, but I’ve asked myself why it matters so much and yeah, we like feeling special, but people tend to forget unless someone else reminds them. I watched your wonderful video via lonesomewanderer. I immediately knew I wanted to see more of you. My late husband was Chinese and I’m enthralled with all things Asian. Recently my sister-in-law chose a Chinese name for me and for Christmas gave me my own chop. I hope that you will accept me as a friend. I have five grown children, one old enough to be your dad. I have seven grandchildren, the oldest is almost your age. Here, I’m fratmom; in my heart I’m Ling Guong Lo.

And wow, I just read your entry…. I feel the EXACT same way. :/ I miss my close friends and feel so detached these days, you know? :/ I don’t know what to do about it, and I’ve just about given up on trying with several of them. Anywho. I hope this birthday was better than your last. I’m not expecting anything this year, even though it’s my 25th, which I had always hoped would be special for me. Hoping for little leaves little room for disappointment. I hate being so far from everyone. I plan on trying to take that weekend off from work, though. I’m hoping that me and a good college buddy can get together and hang out and eat something nice to celebrate our birthday’s together — her’s was in January, and in December, I set down the plan that we would try to do something special together somewhere between our two birth dates.She’s pregnant this year, though. This should be interesting! Poor girl. So if plans fall through with that, I don’t know what I’m going to do. Oh well.

Alas, I will be a measly 20. Just the other day my little sister thought I was around 22, how does my own family forget how old I am?!
