Goodbye to BomCamChuoi (For Now)
BomCamChuoi and I at the San Diego Zoo (January 2009)By now, some of you may have read that she was leaving Xanga. Her site officially shut down yesterday and I’m pretty bummed out about it. She was one of the closest Xangans I’ve gotten to know in the past few months and it’s a shame that I won’t be seeing that all too familiar screen name popping up anymore.I forgot how we initially found one another’s sites. Looking back at old entries, I found that she made her first comment on a post I made back in November 11th, probably way before most of you started reading my blogs. In her comment, she mentioned that I visited her page first, but I can’t remember what it was (no way to check either because her whole site is shut down now).
Ever since then, she has been a regular here on my page, as I was on hers. I think it would be hard to find many posts or pulses I’ve written without seeing a comment left by her. It got to a point where I couldn’t think of Xanga without having her screen name pop up in my head as well.
Eventually, I finally got to meet her back in January, when I took a trip to California. My friend and I were just gonna book a hotel, but she decided to open up her house for us to stay in. That was really kind and trusting of her and it meant a lot. Seriously, how many people who live alone would let two strangers (guys even) stay over her place? I’m glad she did though, because my trip would have been so much different had she not done that for us.
In case you were wondering, the reason why she is leaving Xanga is because she needed “to become an assassin for the government and they needed her off the radar
” (quoted from a text she sent me). Seriously though, it had to do with a job she is trying to apply for and she didn’t want her page to possibly mess up the hiring process. What does that mean? Well once she gets hired ( and surely she will), she will come back to Xanga but under a new screen name. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes (okay it isn’t THAT serious, but you get what I’m trying to say =P), she will hopefully make a return in a month or so.
If not, I will personally fly down to San Diego to convince her otherwise

Yea, I’ve been here long enough to see so many Xangans come and go. It’s the circle of Xanga haha. Everyone has their reasons. She will be back!

That’s what I told her too, but she wanted to be disassociated with that s/n because people can easily google it or something.

At least you knew she was going. That has to be bit of comfort. I hate it when people I really liked reading just up and disappear. (Secretly, though, I know that that is exactly how I will leave Xanga one day–just *poof* and disappear.)

True, I’m glad she gave me a heads up or else I would have been super bummed when I found out she wasn’t on here anymore.
Haha I used to think I would just be one of those poof and disappear folks as well, but at this point I think I would owe to people at least a warning.

Thanks for the update–let her know that I will miss her for now; I believe you referred her to my Xanga and she was a nice person. I can understand her need for privacy though, and am close to withdrawing myself for the same reasons….but I can’t seem to pull away completely. I wish her luck in her new endeavours!

I don’t know what to make of this. Your post is so serious.
Xanga is just xanga. She didn’t die, which means she’s still walking among the living.
People come and go. So if one person shut downs their xanga, should we mourn over it? Depends, I guess, on its sentimentality. Now had she left without telling us why, and we “loved” her very much for her writing, then, of course, I’d wonder, especially if she meant a lot to me. There are, however, others means of communication, you know: email, postal mail, web cam, etc.
I find it strange that we place so much value into these online social communities. Why not value more the relationship in real life than those on cyberspace? Online, people can have different personas and portray a facade that eludes to their personal identity. This post, as well as many others, are a testament to the fact that as each generation goes by more and more are valuing the mere abstractions of the human self than the inherent qualities already indemnified in interpersonal communications.
Is what I just said something an old timer might say?

@Pearls_of_Trust - Was it really that serious? Haha well as you probably read, she’s someone that I know both online and in real life now, so her leaving kinda affect me even more. I know she’s only gone from Xanga, but she’s been a part of my Xanga experience for so long that it’s so weird not seeing her on.

hm… interesting. I say partly it is “old timer” POV and partly reality/truth. I’ve been pulling back from myspace, fb, and xanga for the same reason: real life.
When drama on fb takes over real life drama, when people take random comments too seriously, when offense is deduced from comments that offer a different POV, then we all need to stop. Take a look around. And re-prioritize.

haha, since she regularly comments on all your posts, your overall percentage of daily comments will go down by 2.5 percent. Not a total loss, however. =P And I understand what you were saying. I was trying to see it from a holistic point of view.

Agreed! It’s ridiculous. When you spend the majority of your time settling disputes on some social network rather than facing problems in real life, it’s time for you to step back and get a grip. Of course, social networks like these can be used to relieve stress and foster a variety of ailments. I guess I’m analyzing the vast majority who use these tools to replace their real life. You know a problem exists when you being to deviate from what is considered “natural.”
Perhaps you and I should do a joint Master Thesis on this. =P

haha, I don’t use facebook, myspace, or twitter. I do have, however, an AIM screen name and Xanga. My AIM SN is SoulLifeSpirit. =) Is twitter fun? I heard about it but it didn’t really appeal to me.

LOL I have no idea actually. I don’t have twitter either. I don’t ever use my myspace acct, and I keep facebook to keep in contact with my French friends.
AIM is same as xanga, but I can’t remember the last time I signed in lol. =oP

BomCamChuoi and I haven’t met in person yet, but I hope we can someday. She and I have had great times though, talking about lots of things, particularly relationships… she even helped me through a messy breakup, gracefully! She has a heart of gold and passion for her passions beyond the capacity of most people… really a Superwoman…
I hope she can come back. If not, lets petition her to!

Wow. Shutting down a Xanga for jobs security makes me want to reconsider all my personal info that I’ve been giving out. lol. A lot of time, I heard that a growing number of employers are using the internet to do a background-check of their applicants through myspace. Some did got fired. lol. Also, there was an article relating to that situation as well. Scary world. It’s good that she’s preventing a possibility.
Crap! I’d already connected with her to be a TBO feature.
I have the pics and info already. Well, next time you talk to her, tell her to let me know as soon as she signs back on. I would still like to feature her.

Maybe as early as April 10th! That’s when spring break begins and I’ll finally have the time.
@Roadlesstaken - Yup. Sure am. I was really looking forward her every Food Friday edition. =). But aside from that, she’s really nice. I will miss her. It’s sad ’cause I left for a few days, when I got back, I pulsed if I missed anything, she said I did miss a lot and she was hours away from shutting down her site. That was the last conversation we had.

no, they know about it. and some of my really close friends have xanga’s too but it’s just pretty much my family, (except for two of my cousins) and all my other friends that aren’t into the whole reading and blogging scene.

Yup, it’s rare but there are definitely folks out there that can do it. Unfortunately I’ve only done it twice, but I hope I can get back that ability again. It’s a lot of fun! I’m jealous you can do it consistently.
