  • Love Song = Double-Edged Sword

    You know what song I have playing over and over in my head right now?  “Lucky” by Jason Mraz featuring Colbie Caillat.  Heard of it?

    Here’s Alyssa Bernal & Kris Mark’s cover of “Lucky” (P.S. If I had those singing and guitar playing talent I would so be making videos like this everyday!  For now, I’ll just be giving private shows for those passengers in my car =P)

    It’s such a feel good song, similar to Jason Mraz‘s last single, “I’m Yours“.  I find myself constantly humming and singing this song whenever I’m alone because it’s very soothing, makes me happy, and relaxes me for whatever reason.  I love this song…yet I hate how I can’t relate to it at all at this point of time.  How so?

    Take this sample of the lyrics for instance:

    I'm lucky I'm in love with my best friend
    Lucky to have been where I have been
    Lucky to be coming home again
    Lucky we're in love every way
    Lucky to have stayed where we have stayed
    Lucky to be coming home someday

    Catchy lyrics huh?  However, in the middle of singing this to myself it dawns on me how inapplicable those lines are to my reality.  I’m not lucky to be in love with my best friend because well, I’m not.  I’m not lucky we’re in love in every way because well, there isn’t any “we” currently happening in my life.  I might have been able to claim this a couple of years ago, but alas I’m in the here and now.  Despite all of this, I still can’t help but sing this song to my heart’s content.

    So, while this song brings a lot of good feelings in me, it also manages to remind me that yep, I’m single (and just in time for Valentine’s Day! ).  Although I’ve gotten used to being alone and it doesn’t quite bother me as much as it did say a few months ago, it doesn’t mean I don’t occasionally have the urge for things such as those described in this song.  

    Luckily, this feeling comes and goes, so I’m fine most of the time.  It’s like I’m wearing body armor and occasionally something will hit me out of the blue.  It might phases me a bit, but then I shake it off and go on with my life.

    Anyways don’t worry, I figured out an easy solution to this problem; I’ll just get another song stuck in my head!  Yes!  Hmm let’s click on a random song on my playlist.  *Click*

    Alright, I’m listening to a rather upbeat song.  I wonder what song it is *looks at title*

    Don’t feel badly about Valentine’s day. Your love life shouldn’t be dictated by a holiday. It should happen on it’s own course, naturally, not because the calendar tells you so.

    Oh of course! I’m actually making sure I work on Valentine’s Day in order to keep any effects it could have on me to a bare minimum. Unfortunately for me, it’s influences can still creep up on me now and then.

  • I’m glad that this year, Valentine’s Day falls on a Saturday. I can stay in bed all day…and avoid it like the plague =)

    And probably avoid Xanga and entries similar to this.

  • This will be my first year alone on Valentine’s Day :( I’m working that day and it’s on a Saturday so work will definitely be busy and take my mind off of things. I hope you have an alright Valentine’s Day anyways :]

  • It’s so weird how single people like us can be walking along perfectly happy, then something small like song lyrics sort of shake us up and we think “Oh yeah, I’m still single.” I think moments like that come and go, I had one of those a few days ago and it hit me out of nowhere so I’m feeling your pain. *Le sigh.*

  • To be honest, I never really paid attention on Valentines day…I buy cutesy, cheap valentines from walmart and make cookies. Then pass ‘em out a week late…

  • Hah, I feel just about the same way. I have those urges for a relationship, but they pass. Sometimes you gotta be single for an extended period of time to find more out about yourself, non?

  • I wish i could sing like that! I feel you though, I used to be like that. This valentines day is the first one ever where I’m not going to be single. Feels.. weird. :) In a good way. Think of it this way. Someday you’re going to get married, and then you’ll have all those years where you won’t have a chance to have a valentines day where you can be single. :) You can buy yourself chocolates!

    Do you ever listen to Korean songs? I am currently insanely obsessed with Son Dam Bi’s Bad Boy. HAHA. I have no idea what it’s singing but it’s good stuff.

    Well, when all the couples in your area are having a date on Valentine’s Day, ya’ll singles can have a date of your own! HAHA.

    Honestly though, Valentine’s Day doesn’t bother me anymore. I think we’ve made it as much of a send sweet things to your significant other as send sweet things to your friends. So it’s all good.

  • ooooh i love this song! :) )) whoever thought of writing a song where colbie caillat and jason mraz sing together is a GENIUS! They both have that island reggae sound. The two in the video you posted sound pretty good too! That’s cool how they did the video seperately but still got it to sound in sync. She looks a lot like Vanessa Hudgens.   • I love this song. It reminds me of going to Ocean City. I made a mix cd with this song on it and we listened to it over and over on our drive down and back. “This Modern Love” is another really good song.

  • i love “i’m yours”! my latest [song] addictions, though, would have to be frank sinatra, dean martin, and the like…with michael buble’s new versions of these classics, too–i play a station during work on pandora.com based off “the way you look tonight”–SOO soothing and peaceful, bringing a smile to your face: “someday when i’m all alone, when the world is cold, i will get a glow just thinking of you, and the way you look…tonight” LOVE IT! and “i’m yours,” “i’ve got you under my skin,” “the best is yet to come”…..the only thing is, they’re also very catchy! i hum these 24/7 now :P

    i think too much emphasis is put on valentine’s day period, single or otherwise…but i understand how all the constant ads and talk and merchandise everywhere can get you down. i usually go out with female friends for a nice dinner. this year i have a wedding to go to…now if that doesn’t make you focus on your singleness, idk what would! ;)

    Oh I agree. I hated being single initially, but it has made me realize a lot of things I wouldn’t have known before. The sweet is never as sweet without the bitter I always tell myself.

    Oh it’s getting to that point soon! I’ve been playing it a lot lately and I’m just about over it haha. The radio stations definitely ruined I’m Yours for me btw. I used to always be able to listen to it, but after it became a hit I just couldn’t listen to it anymore.

    I know same here! My friends and I used to book hotels in O.C. during the off season when it’s very cheap. We would then just live it up in these normally expensive hotels. Pool party!

    Jason Mraz just does bouncy happy songs, tis why I love hearing him on the radio. I can at least PRETEND I’m happy go lucky and in love, until it ends.

    Ah very true, Jason Mraz is the master at putting me in dreaming moods. Too bad his songs don’t last forever.
