My Time in California (now with video clip!)
Happy Chinese New Year everyone! I’m so glad I decided to take today off from work because I was way too tired from my plane ride back last night.
If you’ve read my last post or my recent pulses, you probably know that I’ve been in California for the past few days, mainly in San Diego and Los Angeles. I wish I could have planned to stay longer because there were so much more stuff I didn’t see, but I nonetheless saw and did many things during my time over there.
I also got a chance to meet up with Xangans in real life, which is a first for me. I haven’t met any of them before this, so I was excited. How did everything go? Let’s take it day by day, shall we?
*Note: This entry will be very long, but hopefully I wrote it in such a way that you can just skim through if you don’t have the time to read everything*
Thursday: San Diego (Mount Helix, La Jolla Shores, UCSD)
Before I even talk about California, I gotta mention the plane rides over there. On my connecting flight to Chicago, I found out that one of the flight attendants is a member at my tennis & fitness club. She recognized me and gave me some free cookies, which was very nice of her. Small world!
On my flight out of Chicago, I found out that a pilot I know (coincidentally enough is also a member at my club) had emailed the flight crew and told them about me and that they should take extra care of me. I ended up getting a personal greeting from the whole crew and shook hands with the pilot. They also treated my friend Kenny, the person sitting next to me (who I didn’t know), and me to free warm nuts and wine! Hell yeah!
That wine made sleeping a bit easierI arrived in San Diego a little after noon, where we were promptly picked up by Hong (aka BomCamChuoi). She ended up hanging out with us all vacation, housing and driving us all over California. Thank you so much Hong!
After a quick stop at In-N-Out, we took our burgers to eat on top of Mount Helix. What a view of San Diego!
Some extra pics (click to enlarge):
Once we left there, we planned to go to UCSD next, but ended up stopping by La Jolla Shore first. I’m glad we did, because we got to see a beautiful beach filled with seals!
Didn’t slip thank goodnessMore pics (click to enlarge):After that long detour, we finally made it to UCSD where Mai (aka InlUvWiTuRsMiLe) took us on a fun little tour of the campus. For some reason it reminded me of UMBC, except bigger and better. They have singing trees! Perhaps in another life I would have loved to have gone here for school.
Click click boom:
Friday: San Diego (San Diego Zoo, Coronado Bay, Tet Festival in Balboa Park, Ocean Beach)
We spent the first part of the day seeing all the animals in the San Diego Zoo (the best zoo I’ve ever been to!). We saw so many animals and took way too many pictures.
Haven’t been to good zoo in a whileA small selection of the 59680321 pics we took:
Stopped by briefly over at Coronado Bay, which was somehow even more beautiful than the beach before! I felt like I was walking on water.
Playing in the water:
Later that night, we went to a Tet Festival in Balboa Park, ate at Bennigan’s, and viewed Ocean Beach at night. I ended up not taking too many pictures that night because I was bummed about something. That’s a story for another time though. I was able to recover from that the next day after reading aJoLLyDork‘s comment on a pulse telling me that thinking was not allowed on vacation haha. Good call.
Mai (InlUvWiTuRsMiLe) and I on a ferris wheel (can’t really tell from the pic). BTW, I know I’m totally cheesing it in this shot.Friday: Los Angeles (Irvine, UCLA, Griffin Observatory)Our last full day in California! We decided to do a day trip in Los Angeles. We briefly stopped by John’s (aka wutuwaitn4) place in Irvine. He brought two of his other friends along (which, coincidentally enough, he met through Xanga); Regina (aka blahblahfishy) and Susan (aka bobaShop).
We all continued on to UCLA, where we met up with Jennifer (aka jeNNi_RoX). She proceeded to give us a very good tour of UCLA. The campus has so much open spaces and was very pretty to see. I was expecting it to be a lot bigger, but it was still big nonetheless. Yet another college I would have loved to go to in another life.
Xangans (plus Kenny =P)! From left to right: jeNNi_Rox, Kenny, BomCamChuoi, Roadlesstaken (me), wutuwaitn4, blahblahfishy, bobaShopMore pics from UCLA:After eating, Jennifer unfortunately had to leave us to go study. The rest of us drove over to Griffith Observatory, which overlooks Los Angeles. It was so crowded there! I think it was because the sun was about to set and a lot of people wanted to view that from way up top. I know I’ve been using “beautiful” a lot in this post, but seriously the view up there was exactly that.
Don’t worry, there was something below me so I wouldn’t fall off and go SPLATYou know the drill! More pics:
Saturday: Departed California back to good old MarylandNot too much to say except we woke up at the buttcrack of dawn to catch our flight at 6:17am. Got just 2 hours of sleep the night before and barely any sleep on the plane ride back. Lovely.
That concludes my time over in California. Can’t wait until I go on my next trip, whenever that may be. Hmm, where should I visit next? Canada? New York? Florida? Texas? We’ll see!
—-EDIT—-
Oops, forgot to add the video clips I took on here. Here’s a YouTube link below of videos taken at the San Diego Zoo and the Griffith Observatory. Btw, I know I wrote “Griffin” instead of “Griffith” in the video caption. Whoops!
Comments (102)
Hahaha I love the picture of Kenny eating a burger in front of the cross!
@Lynn1013 -
oops, accidentally saved this under protected instead of private haha. It wasn’t finished yet, but now it is. You can check it out now!
warm nuts, yummy.
@wutuwaitn4 -
Haha I was waiting to see if someone would make a comment about that. Guess that didn’t take too long!
Sounds like you had fun!
I want to eat an In-N-Out burger in front of a cross.
lucky you, looks like you had alot of fun ^^ that’s alot of xangans you met, how cool<3
Glad you two had fun. Hey! You never mentioned that also made breakfast on Friday morning and prepared peanut butter sandwiches that no one ate!
Looks amazing! Did you check out the exhibits inside Griffin Observatory?
You should come to San Francisco/the Bay Area for your next trip! =]
Wow, now I think I need a vacation…preferably somewhere with no snow!
Wow, I can’t believe a random Xanga housed you. Not sure if I could go to sleep very well if I were either of you.
Glad you had a great time though. Never knew there were singing trees and seal beaches at SD. Thanks for all the pics. It’s nice to see some of the things that you’re talking about.
you didn’t visit UC Irvine’s campus?!!! I think you’d like it. I went to school at UC Irvine for 4 years and when I get the chance to bring people there, they all like it. also, seems like the weather was good to you throughout the weekend. lastly, where are the pictures of the pandas?!!
Nice pictures! I haven’t been in Cali in so long… as for your next visit, you should come over to the Midwest. Indianapolis is where I call home; but Chicago is my second home: totally visit Chi-town. Many things to see and do there as well.
I just skimmed thru (on a tight schedule) and it looks like you had a lot of fun!!!! I will be back to read every single word…because i hate skimming.
haha. you need to tell me what you were thinking about like now cause i’m a very impatient girl XP Happy Lunar New Year XD
PRETTY!! Lucky you got to go to Cali before me. You should go when I go!
welcome to my home.
I’m moving back there ~ <3 god. Idk how you could actually write a blog so quickly afterwards..lol, I waited a whole week hahahaha
I’m glad you had fun :]
and Happy New Year to you
I plan on going to New York during my spring break. That’s always an exciting place to go to
@Krissy_Cole -
Haha I know right? Hopefully we weren’t breaking some unwritten rule haha.
@xJanetirax -
It was pretty cool! It was almost like meeting old friends. Wasn’t too weird.
@BomCamChuoi -
Ah yea I know, I also forgot to write about our dinner the night before we left. I felt my post was already running too long, so I had to cut out certain things =P
I’m so jealous. It looks like you had a really, really nice time. Isn’t San Diego pretty?
@xLove_Me_Alwaysx -
I looked at some of the exhibits in the Griffin Observatory, but it was only brief because we wanted to see the sunset before it was too late. I’m guessing you’ve been there before? There was so much cars there! We had to park about a mile away and walk up there!
San Francisco would be a good trip! I have relatives there, so I could probably stay there for free haha. You from there I’m assuming right?
@grinner08 -
haha nah I did good background check to make sure she was alright
. She didn’t chop me up or anything, so that’s good!
Oh I forgot if I ever asked, but are you from that area or ever visited?
@faerienoodles -
Very good call. That’s partly the reason why I wanted to go! I wanted to leave stupid MD weather for a few days haha.
@aJoLLyDork -
Oh really?? Shoot, when I asked watuwaitn4 about what we could see in Irvine, he said all there was were beaches and malls haha. He didn’t mention the college, but I guess because he went there he didn’t think it was a big deal. The weather was more or less good. It rained randomly, but luckily it wasn’t so much that we needed umbrellas.
Oh, I took pictures of pandas as well haha. Would you like me to post them?
ahaha awww thats awesome ^^
@rianahntr -
I was actually thinking about going to Chicago! It’s not too far of a plane ride there. I had to fly there first and when I flew over the city it looked really nice. If I find a friend to go maybe I’ll take a weekend trip down there. What other things are over there?
@lilvietchik2003 -
aw thanks! I totally understand that you had to skim; it was much longer post than I anticipated. I really did do a lot and took a lot of pictures in those few days XP
@InlUvWiTuRsMiLe -
So you’re impatient and a horrible tour guide?? Life has been unkind to you.
Sooo just kidding
@rhetorical_soul -
You’re going too??? What part? When you going?
@immaairheadxl -
After visiting, I can see why you wanna go back haha. Eh, figured I should write it now while the memories are still fresh in my head. You were absolutely right; 3 days wasn’t enough.
@B1ANCACACA -
Awesome! Ever been there? I went there the past summer for the first time since I was a little boy.
@Roadlesstaken -
Probably in the Summer. If not, Winter 09. If I’m going to Cali, I’m going everywhere – San Diego, San Fran, Santa Barbara, etc.
@TheCheshireGrins -
Very very pretty. How long were you there again? I obviously did not spent enough time there!
@rhetorical_soul -
Awesome, I’m debating whether or not I should visit CA again this year haha. There was so much more to see and the few days I went were not enough. San Fransisco is one place I didn’t see but wanted to check out. It was 8 hours driving distance from San Diego though, so that’s why I didn’t go.
@Roadlesstaken -
Oh, I’ve visited. Why?
@Roadlesstaken -
so much to do. you can do the touristy stuff and check out the hancock building. there’s the sears tower. take a drive on lake shore drive. there’s millenium park, and there’s an outdoor skating rink. during the summer, there are many outdoor free concerts in grant park. and lots of free festivals, too. i go up to chicago at least one weekend a month to visit my boyfriend. he’s my tour guide
@grinner08 -
oh nah, just wondering if you were from the area or not.
@rianahntr -
Ooooo does sound pretty good. I’ll remember that next time I plan a trip!
@Roadlesstaken -
There’s also the two Chinatowns to discover amongst the museums, Obama’s home, etc.
yes…put up the pictures of the pandas!
@Roadlesstaken -
Oh! Haha. If you do go. We should just catch a cheap flight or something. LOL
you should def go to chicago next! i live just outside of chicago! (but i go to school in champaign at UofI) but there is TONS to see! you can see the bean, the hancock and the sears tower, musume campus has a lot of cool stuff-an aquarium, field, and a plantarium, and there is a science one! you can see the bears, cubs, white sox (boo) play if you come during the seasons! if you like shopping-mag mile is a must!
@aJoLLyDork -
Alright the pics are up, enjoy!
@rhetorical_soul -
Maybe we should! Keep me updated. I always enjoy excuses to go on vacation haha.
@Huong -
Oooh sweet. I guess if I do go I should go for at least a week huh?
@Roadlesstaken -
will do.
That looks like a spectacular trip
.
You should totally come to Canada, come hang out in BC for a while (no one likes Toronto, you see. LOL).
Cheers, and thanks for making me want to travel even more
Taylor
Yeah I’ve been 3 times. First time was with my dad for business, second was with my friend to visit her family, and third time I went with my friend’s church.
This time I’ll be going with two of my friends. We will probably just go for the day and take the bus back to VA. Bus tickets are only like 50 dollars round trip
@rhetorical_soul -
btw, what’s the status on that sketch? Still doing them or has that fallen off your radar?
@skylar_rose -
Traveling is a lot of fun! I think I’m gonna do it quite a few more times before a go to grad school later this year. haha, what’s wrong w/ Toronto?
@B1ANCACACA -
50 bucks really?? I know there’s a bus out of DC that cost 100 bucks round trip. It has wireless on board!
Oooomgosh, when we went to the observatory, it wasn’t packed, and we parked right in the lot. The planetarium inside was pretty cool, but I fell asleep, right next to a professor. xD
Yep, raised in SF and still in the bay, going to Berkeley!
@xLove_Me_Alwaysx -
When did you go? it was supremely packed when we got there. The lot was closed! We didn’t see the show that’s held there because according to John (wutuwaitn4) it’s pretty boring haha.
So if I go to SF would you maybe show me around Berkeley?
Yeah there’s a few Chinese bus companies in Virginia Beach that are insanely cheap. My manager goes to New York once a month and is Chinese so that’s how I found out about it. I doubt they would have wireless internet though, lol.
Aw, I hope your time in LA was at least a little bit fun and with a little bit of sun! I grew up in La Jolla though and I’m jealous you were down in the downtown La Jolla area. I miss the seals *sigh* but I’m glad you got to see them
I hope you enjoyed all that SD and LA had to offer!
No night life?
Awesome…
soooooooo fun………….
i want a roadtrip of my own!! xP
and a xanga meetup!!awesome!!
boo.. i am jealous!!
Ahh. Looks like you celebrated well. As for me, I did nothing for Chinese New Year this year, lol. I’m a bad Chinawoman this year. Hey, I was born on Chinese New Year though in 1986 on February 9th
@Roadlesstaken -
it’s going to take a while but I will finish!
@MochaSprinkle -
Oh cool, so do you still live in San Diego or did you move away?
@Agent_Eric -
Thought about it but plans fell through.
@s_h_a_sha -
Hey if you ever decide to go to college in the states then there you go! Of course you could always set up some Malaysian meet up.
@whatsupyeh -
ah, so you’re about 19 days older than me! I didn’t do too much for Chinese New Year; just ate dinner and received loads of red envelopes
I LOVE Mount HELIX! You went to all the right places. La Jolla is beautiful. I love San Diego in general, my haven. The beaches have the best views. I’m glad you had fun in SO CAL.
@SUGARCANEkitty -
The beaches seriously were amazing sights. When was the last time you been there? Are you from that area?
@Roadlesstaken -
I’m in the LA COUNTY area. My family lives down there. I love the weather there, compared to any other parts in cali- No better weather than SAn Diego. I was there last year. Too long. When I get the chance to escape down there I do. It’s a real nice place to think and relax. I love the open roads and the neighborhoods and communities built around there. Fun eateries and historical sites. My uncle use to be in the Navy.
btw. SEA PORT VILLAGE! that should be a destination for you the next time you go.
I was down in LA April of last year, looking at Occidental College. I was considering that school at the time, and their itinerary for visiting students included the observatory. Free everything! Twas awesome.
I’d love to show you around Berkeley! Beware: I charge $15/hr for tours.
Jay kay.
Looks like you had a good time. The beach pictures are awesome.
aww I’m going to LA in 3 days~ too bad you’re already gone, otherwise I could have joined the Xanga party lol. AND I live in Chicago, so you (sort of) got to see my city too. Small world indeed. Maybe next time our trips will coincide. =] Anyways, GREAT pics! Glad you had a good trip.
@SUGARCANEkitty -
Yea, I heard the weather was consistently around the 60-70 degree range, which to me is the perfect weather. Haha I may have to copy you and use San Diego as my getaway place as well! If I have the money I would go down there as often as I can.
@xLove_Me_Alwaysx -
15 bucks?! Damn, you better show me all the secret areas of Berkeley for that! Haha.
@Simbathe2nd -
The beaches were gorgeous. It felt like every picture I took could be put in a picture frame and hung somewhere in my house. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to go visit San Diego if you ever get the chance.
@BaRBieGiRL_92587 -
Aw shucks, too bad about the timing. What’s your reason for going to LA? Staying there long?
That’s a lot of squawking birds!
@grinner08 -
I know right? That’s why I recorded that because they were so loud! haha also, did you notice that one interesting bird chasing away a duck?
@Roadlesstaken -
Yeah what was that?
@grinner08 -
I don’t know! I read the bird descriptions on the side but couldn’t find that one. Perhaps it infiltrated into that location haha. There were randomly roaming birds all around i.e. that peacock.
awww! that’s so cool meeting all the xangans there! haha and of course, seeing California! that’s my next stop too! too bad u didn’t stay that long! but then again, there’s always next time! lol =]
@pasaway4eva -
Your next stop eh? When you going, and what part you checking out? I really wish I could have stayed longer. I think I will have to visit CA again in the near future because I definitely didn’t see everything.
Looks like an absolutely gorgeous trip. I remembering applying for facebook and google jobs with cover letters that just read “HIRE ME PLEASE! I WANT TO VISIT CALIFORNIA!” Of course I didn’t get the jobs
Coronado Bay… looked like it was very very quiet. Must have been nice.
well idk really haha we have somefamily in San diego so we’ll be around there. but I also wanna see LA too of course. and san francisco wouldn’t be so bad to visit either! but I’m pretty sure I’m not goin there anytime soon! lol
a week would be good! there’s just so much to do.. i have lived there my whole life (21 ish years) and i def have not seen everything… i only started going to the tourist sites bc friends form college that were not from chicago would come to visit and really wanted to see it! here’s more info for ya.. i def forgot about navy pier!http://www.chicagotraveler.com/attractions.htm
San Diego Zoo~~~
I loved it.
@AzureRecollections -
Did you seriously write that on your cover letters?? Man CA was great. Coronado Bay was very empty for some reason. That beach was so pretty and relaxing.
@thepenguinishere -
Oh you been as well?
looks like you had a lot of fun
great pics!
@charmed1alwayz -
It was quite fun. I think I’m already planning my return trip there in my head haha.
Those panda pics look like a person disguising as a panda………. LOL
@GaMeGurLsH -
Maybe they were haha. I wonder how much one would get paid to impersonate a panda?
DAMNIT YOU WENT TO CALI! hong told me..i live in cali la..haha. next time you tell me! i wanna meet xangans too!
@LadyAsianInvasion -
Oh man so wait, you only just notice I went to CA?? I mean I did make several posts/pulses about me heading over and asking CA Xangans if they wanna meet up haha. Guess you need to read my blog more often =P. What part of CA are you from? Oh, do you know Hong personally?
@Roadlesstaken - yah..i was barely new to xanga though..*heh* i think i had you on my friend thingy. dunno hong personally..talked to her on im. i live in cali la. noticed the observatory..that’s 30 from my place..im near long beach.
@LadyAsianInvasion -
Ah cool. Too bad, you could have joined us! Then I could have checked out long beach as well.
It’s Griffith Observatory not Griffin
Just to let you know
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX -
!!!! Are you serious?! My goodness, why didn’t anyone tell me that until now?!
Haha thanks for pointing that out. Will make the changes. Damn, too bad I can’t fix that video caption
What a wonderful trip to Cali!
I’m jealous and I’m in california! haha The g. observatory is beautiful and your pictures just reminded me how badly I want to go there ^_^ UCLA has a wonderful campus, while SD has the best beaches~ hehe again *jealous*
I love how you met up w/ the Xangans~ How fun! ^_^
@Casa_blanca_lilies -
What part of CA are you from? Maybe next time I visit CA you could be one of the Xangans I meet!
haha, I’m in southern cali la/oc area! Yes yes, it shall be fun although I’d be the one buried in the library studying ^_^
@Roadlesstaken -
Lol yes I wonder why no one pointed that out… xD
Did you get to see the little statue of James Deans head? (dedicated to his “Rebel Without A Cause” movie).
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX -
Mhmm I did I did! I even took a pic of it but didn’t post it here.
And yes, I wonder why no one else pointed it out to me. Perhaps they thought it was Griffin too? *shrugs*
@Roadlesstaken -
Cool, I really liked the movie. Have you seen it?
Perhaps, now you will always have that memory in your video. Lol.
So you just meet up with random xangans?
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX -
I haven’t seen any James Dean movies, but I’ve heard a lot of good stuff about him. Perhaps one day I’ll check it out.
Yea, I more or less met up w/ random Xangans, although I’ve communicated with most of them for several months now. It was a fun experience!
@Roadlesstaken -
You should check out “Rebel Without a Cause” it was actually filmed at the Observatory. It’s a really good movie, James Dean’s acting is fantastic.
Sounds like fun, I hardly ever go on xanga to write, I mostly just read other peoples blogs (well every once in a while), I can’t keep up with all the posts & people I subbed to haha.
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX -
Will do. I always like watching movies that take place in places I’ve been to. It gives me a surreal feeling.
I used to sorta be like that as well until not too long ago. I just started writing things down and things just happened haha. Glad I did, because I met a lot of folks and read a lot of blogs I never would have if I hadn’t gotten more active.
@Roadlesstaken -
Have you seen the “Transformers” (2007) movie? Some scenes were filmed at the Observatory :]
I think I subbed to you a while back I don’t remember, haha, but I hardly read my subs xD
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX -
I have! I was told by some of the people I was with that there were scenes from that movie shot there, but I can’t remember which scenes specifically.
I thought you looked familiar, but I wasn’t sure haha
@Roadlesstaken -
Hmm, I know there was the scene on the rooftop and a scene showing the whole observatory on the hill, and a scene with the two main characters on the grass area, but I don’t remember what was going on in the movie in those parts haha. You should have stayed there when it was dark, the view from the rooftop is amazing
& you can look in the telescopes.
Did you write about Twilight once? I might have commented about that, other than that I don’t think I’ve commented your posts before. Haha.
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX -
Oh I did! My Twilight review from a male’s perspective right?
@Roadlesstaken -
It was probably that entry haha. It’s been a while. I believe you wrote a review?
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX -
Yep a review. Wow, that was about 2 months ago! Geez, has that much time pass? Life goes by really fast at times.
@Roadlesstaken -
Haha that must have been it.
Yeah, I haven’t been on xanga since then haha. Are you on xanga all the time??
By the way loving the songs on your playlist, Chasing Cars – Snow Patrol, amazing song. Do you listen to The Fray?
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX -
Not all the time but I do check it pretty regularly, especially now that I have the iPhone and I can just sneak a peak at my feeds anytime.
I do listen to The Fray sometimes, although I have to admit I got sick of them for a while after my friend (who loves them) played “How to Save a Life” OVER AND OVER AND OVER again haha.
@Roadlesstaken -
Oh no wonder haha. I wish I had an iPhone. But I find it quite hard to text on it.
Haha yeah that’s a popular song, have you heard their recent song from them called “You Found Me”, I think it was featured in the tv show ”Lost”, music video.?? i’m not sure since I don’t watch that show xP
@XxTwIx_N_sKiTtLeSxX -
Of course, especially since Lost is my favorite tv show! That songs not bad. I didn’t like it at first, but it’s starting to grow on me. I recently discovered a song by them called “All At Once”. Ever heard of that? I really like that song.
@Roadlesstaken -
I never was able to get “Lost” haha.
Yeah I’ve heard the song “All At Once” another great song of theirs
Most of their songs from their “How To Save A Life” album is really good.
I really like “Over My Head (Cable Car)”
It. looks. awesome.
@tigerdauphin - it was
