  • My Grandma, The Character

    So you may be wondering why you’re seeing a horribly sketched picture of North America.  I’ll get to that, but first let me tell you a little back story about how this sketch came about and how it relates to my um, “interesting” grandmother.

    I know my grandma really cares about me and only want me to be well.  She has taken care of me throughout my life and has pretty much been my main provider of food over the years.  I’m glad she was there for me all this time, helping my parents raise me and such, and I am thankful for that.

    That being said, my grandma is one of the most nagging, hypocritical, and just crazy person I’ve ever known.

    To give you an idea, here’s an example of an annoying trait of hers.  She will ALWAYS assume you’re hungry and will keep on offering food to you no matter what you say.  If you’re unlucky, she may have the food already prepared for you and thus forces you to eat.  If I ever brought my friends over and they said they weren’t hungry, my grandmother would believe I was being mean and denying them food.

    She apparently also thinks I don’t know how to use a microwave or stove, since everytime I’m in the kitchen she will proceed to give me step by step directions until I interrupt her.  Sometimes, I would already be finished with making what I was going to eat and she would STILL tell me directions like a freakin’ automated machine.  I’m usually a very patient guy, but I get driven loco to the max!

    That’s just the tip of the iceberg.  There are a ton of little stories I have about my grandma (i.e. her cure-all soup, me looking for her lost tooth, her extremely hypocritical stance on what she thinks you should eat and what she actually eats).  If you wanna hear more then maybe I’ll write another entry in the future about her.

    Now, let me tell you about the Canada Call Story.

    Note:  if you see a sentence <like this>, that means the words were said in Cantonese in my story.  If you see a sentence (like this), it means it was a thought in my head.  If you see a sentence *like this*, it means it was an action.  FYI, my Cantonese speaking ability can be pretty pathetic at times.  Cantonese is my grandma’s second language, as her first language is some obscure dialect of Chinese.  Also, she speaks extremely little English.  All of that adds to the wonderful miscommunication I’m about to tell you about.

    Not too long ago, I was getting ready to go to a job interview.  I figured I should let my grandma know that I was going to leave.

    Me:  <Grandma, I’m going to my job interview!>
    Grandma:  <Are you hungry?  If you are, I’m already cooking rice and I can cook up some eggs, spam….>
    Me:  <I’m NOT hungry!  I told you I’m leaving soon!  Why would I want to eat now?>
    Grandma:  <Okay okay.  Before you leave, can you tell me who called me earlier?>

    I had some time to spare, so I go to the caller ID to see who called.  There was no name, but the ID said “Saskatchewan”.

    Me (Shoot, how do you say Canada in Cantonese again?  I’m pretty sure it sounds like the English word.  Whatever, I think my grandma would at least know this word):  <Someone from> Canada <called>.
    Grandma:  <Where?>
    Me (in the most FOBish accent I could make):  CA-NA-DA.
    Grandma:  Canada?  <I don’t know what that is.>
    Me:  <I know you know this place.  We went on our last family vacation there!>
    Grandma:  <I don’t know.>

    At this point my frustration was starting to build up, so I put down my portfolio and took out a piece of paper.  I quickly sketched the image at the top of this entry, minus the circles showing New York, Maryland, and California.  Those showed up later as we mentioned them.  keep reading, you’ll understand.

    Me:  <This is the United States, right?>
    Grandma:  *Nods*
    Me: *Circles where MD would be* <This is> Maryland, <right?  Where we live, right?>
    Grandma:  *Nods*
    Me:  *Circles where NY would be* <This is> New York, <right?>
    Grandma:  *Nods* New York.
    Me:  <Good.  Now if you kept on going up, where would you be at?>
    Grandma:  California?

    After I mentally smack my head, I decided to keep on trying to explain to her that someone from Canada called.  I’m almost starting to not care if I’m late for my job interview.  I feel like if I didn’t somehow make my grandma understand, I would go crazy.  So I kept on going.  How foolish of me.

    Me:  <No no, California is over here.> *Circles where CA would be*
    Grandma:  <Oh yes yes>, San Francisco!
    Me:  <Yes, that’s there too.  Okay now back over here.. you see> New York?  <You see this large country up here?  If you were to drive past> New York <and go higher up, you’ll be here.  This is where the call came from.  What is this place called?>

    My grandma took a few seconds to really think about it.  I even wrote down the word “Canada”, hoping she would somehow recognize it from her past.  After what seems like minutes, she finally gave me her well thought out answer.

    Grandma:  <Heaven?>
    Me:

    Me:  AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!
    Grandma:  <What?>

    *SWOOOF*

    That’s the sound of me picking up all my interview things and running right out the door.

    Why oh why would she think I was referring to Heaven??  Perhaps when I said “go higher up”, she thought I meant up in the sky.  However, that still doesn’t take away from the fact that her initial question to me was “who called?” and that “Heaven” would no way have been the right answer (unless God has a funny new way of reaching out to people).

    Later, my mom explained it to my grandma and we all had a good laugh (well, my mom and I did.  My grandma was still a little confused).  Oh grandma.  Has any of your grandmas or grandpas ever frustrated you like this incident had for me?

    Now you know part of the reason why I’m trying to relearn Cantonese

  • LOL. That was such a great laugh.

    “Me (in the most FOBish accent I could make): CA-NA-DA.” LOL I do that sometimes when I don’t remember the Vietnamese word for something. I just say the English word in a fobby accent hoping that I was somewhat right.

    Your grandma sounds cute, but I can see how you would get frustrated. :D

  • My late paternal grandmother was cantonese, so she technically assumes that I should be able to speak cantonese. Some how through lots of assumptions, miscommunication, hand signs and her asking a question in cantonese, me replying in bits of chinese & english, we’ll always understand each other eventually.
    And yes, grandma always assume I’m hungry and force feeds me with tons of food & even though I’m fat as hell already, she thinks I’m too skinny.
    *Sigh* I do miss her lots.

  • “Me (in the most FOBish accent I could make): CA-NA-DA.” LOL I do that sometimes when I don’t remember the Vietnamese word for something. I just say the English word in a fobby accent hoping that I was somewhat right. “

    That would be me and Chinese sometimes…….lol

    Does your grandmother speak toisan wa? :)

  • Hahahaha!! California? Heaven?? I love your grandma! XD

  • LOL…that was hilarious. What’s even better is that I can picture you and your grandma having the conversation in cantonese too. Makes it seem as if I was right there watching.

  • @InlUvWiTuRsMiLe -

    Haha well apparently the Cantonese word for Canada sounds like CAN-NA-DIE, so I was hoping my grandma would recognize that.

    @cupcakequeenie -

    I think my grandma and I have our own form of communication similar to what you described. Ah, Chinglish is wonderful isn’t it?

  • @Femme003 -

    OMG she does! How did you know that??

    @Lynn1013 -

    Urgh I think I do as well, but man can she be a handful at times X_X

    @Simply_Mizz_J -

    Haha cool, I was trying to remember exactly how our conversation went and it pretty much follows as I wrote. I’m glad what I wrote was clear enough for people to understand =).

  • hahaha… how cute! Yup, my g-ma and g-pa are the same like that too… i’m sure you guys had a good laugh after talking it over again..

  • lol tht’s funny. grandparents are always cofusing, aren’t they? i worked at subway last time, some of them just make me wanna pull my hair and vomit blood. eeek

  • Hahaha, that was enjoyable :) I hope your interview went well! My grandparents and great aunts are perfectly fluent in English, but when they want to talk amongst themselves or to one of the older kids they’ll go into gaelach. It drives me nuts since I know only the few words I was taught as a toddler! As pay back, my cousins and I will go into French, something we all took in high school. It annoys them to no end!

  • Firstly I think your picture is cute… but it remines me of scoops of ice on top of a waffle cone.
    It is pretty fun what they can learn from tv & movies.
    I feel like that sometime when I explain american slang words to my parents.
    But my Vietnamese is pretty good and my Cantonese is pretty much nonexistent.

  • lol according to your so cool grandma I am living in heaven already haha :) And lol so you speak english to ur parents? no canton?

  • It DOES look like ice cream! I loled in the library =(.

  • That was entertaining… and an amusing smiley too.

    I’m also Chinese and speak Cantonese to my whole family. But since my mother took it upon herself to force nine years of Chinese school upon me, miscommunication happens less often. However, that doesn’t prevent incidents like this.

    Grandma calls.
    Me – Hi, pau pau.
    Grandma – Have you eaten dinner yet?
    Me – Yes.
    Grandma – What’d you eat?
    Me – Reheated rice and soong.
    Grandma – Oh ok. What are you doing now?
    Me – Watching tv.
    Grandma – Ok, well brush your teeth and go to sleep soon. It’s almost 9!
    ….I check the clock that clearly says 8 pm.

    *facepalm*

  • entertaining for me, but a relief for you now that this entry is off your chest :P

  • that was entertaining lol i don’t have any grand parents (at all) that would nag me to eat or do stuff but my parents nag the crap out of me! lol

  • Haha Too funny! When I go visit my parents, they always tell me to go get something to eat from the kitchen; but they don’t really force me to eat. My mom raised six kids, and all six kids had different preferences in food. There is also a big communication barrier with my parents and me; though Vietnamese was my first language, I was immersed into the American public school system and now only conversational in Viet.

    Your grandma is hilarious!

    Unfortunately, I was never able to go back to Vietnam to visit my grandparents of both sides. Both sets died before I could.

  • Hello Mr. Chan,
    You made your site simple yet elegant. The music player and pictures are a nice touch. I see that you have a wide variety of interests and observations here!
    I’m sending an important message to people about God’s plans for us that is in the Bible: 17You make God tired with all your talk. “How do we tire him out?” you ask. By saying, “God loves sinners and sin alike. God loves all.” And also by saying, “Judgment? God’s too nice to judge.” (Malachi 2:17) (Message Bible)

  • haha too cute :) that’s like my mom who’s always trying to pack me stuff when i’m on the go. whenever i go on a plane ride, it’s “hooold onnnnn!!” and then she’ll go scuttle off to the kitchen to gather all sort of foods.

    when my sis went to visit her bf’s family in the east coast, my mom had me go with her to costco so we could buy 1 case of pears, 1 case of mangoes, 1 pineapple, and various other fruits that i have forgotten. apparently she thinks they lack fruit over there. luckily, the luggage wasn’t that large, so they had to “ration” themselves. it was pretty funny :P

  • hahahhaahaahahha. I LOVE THIS POST!!!! LOL

    “HEAVEN” priceless!!! lol, how cute =DDDDDDD..ohh, btwnnnn..

    i speak.. engviet = english& viet mix

    “chao mom, lam ki what u cooking? ” lol. hello mom, what you doin, what u cookin! haha

  • she just wanna fatten u up ;)

  • omg… my grandma is like that too… but she does not even know english only canto and hakka!!!

    i miss her!!! =(  i miss her nagging…. !!!! i miss always having someone to make a big fuss about every little cut i have and every prize i win !!!!

    ps: canada in canto = ka la tai

    xP

  • This post gave me a good laugh! I can definitely see how you would be frustrated :)

  • LOL!!  That is hilarious!!!

  • Your grandma… is so precious! :) Thanks for sharing this!

  • Charming story!

  • @Pur3_S3duction -

    I think a lot of Asian grandparents are like that. They seem to forget that we aren’t starving all the time now like they may have in the past. Eh, I guess it’s just habit.

    @darth_cosmos -

    You work at the foodchain Subway or an actual subway?

    @AubbySilver -

    Actually, the interview went *thumbs down* haha. I don’t think it was any fault from my grandma holding me back though, so that’s good.

    @nice_girl589 -

    Haha an ice cream cone? How do you see that? Oh wait, is it like my Mexico is the cone and on top are two scopes?

    @BigSarah -

    I’ve actually been to the mom site before! Didn’t know they had a dad version as well. Do they have a grandparents version? If not, they should!

  • @yeeeeelainezz -

    I speak a mixture of Cantonese and English with my parents. I try to speak Cantonese if I’m able to though. I’ve been telling them they should speak to me more in Canto instead of English so I can learn more.

    @d2H5b -

    Did anyone look at you weird?

    @xLove_Me_Alwaysx -

    Haha oh man, when I was living on campus my grandma would think I never ate at school or something, because everytime I came home she would ask me if I’ve been eating (apparently, I look skinnier to her each time I come back). I wish my mom had forced me to go to chinese school when I was younger. She doing that w/ my little brother now.

    I call my paternal grandma “neen neen”, but apparently that’s something different than what I should be calling her. What’s another term to call your grandma? p.s. I call my maternal grandma pau pau

    @BabyGurlDragon88 -

    My parents aren’t nagging quite yet, but my mom is starting to show hints of it. Oh no, I hope it isn’t passed on to me!

  • @BomCamChuoi -

    aw I’m sorry to hear. I’ve known 3 out of 4 grandparents. There’s one in China that I still haven’t met.

    @God_is_our_Father -

    Thank you, I’m glad you like my site!

    @whitemyst -

    @whitemyst -

    haha, that reminds me of my grandma whenever I headed back to college. I had a meal plan and I had my own rice cooker at school (although that wasn’t allowed…shhh!), but she thought I would go starve so she gives me bags and bags of meat, rice, and MORE meat.

    @immaairheadxl -

    Urgh, I always combine the languages too. I’m always afraid to talk to other people who speak Canto because I don’t wanna embarrass myself when I do that

  • @der_lila_Stern -

    @SarahakaHungry -

    @kirstenh04 -

    @CareyGLY -

    @TheCheshireGrins -

    Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, and thank you

  • I have stories of my grandpa! He can make me feel *so* embarrassed and when we go to restaurants! I think someone has spat on our food a couple of times. lol But he is the best! ^-^

    So funny, I wanna hear/read the missing tooth story!

  • GA-NA- DAI

    well, I always do that to my brother too asking if he has eaten yet. Everytime he leaves or stays in his room too long, I’ll knock and be like…did you eat yet?? He usually responds: IF I AM HUNGRY, I WILL EAT. During when he leaves, I usually ask him the same question until he gets annoyed with me.

  • hahahahaha, oh my god, that’s too funny! I love it XD

  • I want to learn Cantonese and Mandarin. I remember some of the senior clients that I had to tutor for Project SHINE couldn’t understand English very well. So, in order for me to communicate with them, I would do gestures, facial expressions, or draw pictures (sort of like Charades :P ). It was challenging but a lot of fun :) .

  • [I call my paternal grandma "neen neen", but apparently that's something different than what I should be calling her. What's another term to call your grandma?]

    Maternal grandma = pau pau.
    Paternal grandma = ma ma. But not like “mom.” Different tone.

  • @xLove_Me_Alwaysx -

    Ah right, I do remember my mom saying that once. I just call her neen neen because apparently that’s grandma in her dialect.

  • so i saw your comment (it was the first one so i couldn’t help it) on the other datingish blog about serial daters/helping my friend stay single. i smiled inside. my fb status yesterday was “Chanelle got her own.” haha. i like that songggg <3

    dudeeee i STILL can’t think of a good question for you. hmpgh.

    and my finals are killing me =(

  • haha woops this is s0rair0. im logged in my friends xanga. my badd

  • @tequila_sky -

    omg the tooth story…haha I will probably write about it in the near future. It’s one of those “wtf grandma?” stories.

    @Carolina17 -

    Thank you, glad you digged it!

    @retarded_beautiful -

    NOOOO don’t become like that!! Haha I can understand your bro’s frustration. I’ve given that explanation to my grandma SO many times but she still doesn’t get it.

    @knzircon9 -

    Haha that actually sounds a lot of fun. So what languages do you know fluently?

  • @roadtoskinny -

    Hey, my last name is a part of your first name! Ah sorry to hear about your finals, but hey it’s almost over.

    p.s. Hmm, I just realized your friend is gonna get this reply on her home page haha. To friend: if you’re wondering how you commented on my page w/o actually commenting yourself, talk to s0rair0

  • LOL my friend is here right now so i think she knows. bwahahah. (.__.);; lol

  • lol, your grandma sounds so cute…

    My grandparents are typical grandparents. they can be super adorable and super annoying at times, but i still love them!

  • @Roadlesstaken -

    Just English and Vietnamese. I’m currently learning Spanish.

  • Grandmothers are blessings.

  • Oh, and I love your playlist. :)

  • @Loniii -

    Haha, I guess that’s why they’re family huh? Sometimes you can’t stand them, but you stand them anyways because you care.

    @Soda_Soap -

    They are for sure, just on particular days they seem less of a blessing haha. But yea, I definitely appreciate having both my grandmothers close by. p.s. Thanks, I’m glad you like my music taste! Any particular songs you dig?

  • That was an amusing post… and hey it’s not consider “unlucky” if your grandma keeps offering you food, its because she cares for you. Your grandma speaks toi san wa dialect? my family speaks that as well. :)

  • Curses perhaps? Haha, kidding. I’m glad you appreciate your grandmothers.

    I can listen to Chasing Cars, I Will Follow You Into the Dark, Stolen, Look After You, When Did Your Heart Go Missing, I Wanna Love You Girl, Heartless, Green Light, and Why Does She Stay over and over again. But all of your songs are great.

  • lol! she sounds adorable! =)

  • @Secret_Qt -

    I’m glad I have plenty of food to eat, but you know what they say; sometimes less is more haha. Ah, so you speak toi san was as well? do you know what region of China typically speaks that?

    @Soda_Soap -

    Excellent, I was hoping you would at least have Chasing Cars on there . That’s my all time favorite song as of this moment. It has a lot of stiff competitions though haha.

    @vtpryncess -

    Wanna borrow her? =P

  • I love that song! I’m trying to remember the first time I heard it.

    I’m curious. Why was somebody from Canada calling your grandmother in the first place? haha

  • @Roadlesstaken - owh sorry haha. subway the foodchain.

  • Wooot job interview! =o)

  • LOL XD
    my grandma always thinks that i’m hungry too!!! I’m gaining weight nonstop and all she can say is:
    “There’s some leftover food, u want me to reheat it?”
    “No, I’m full”
    “I’ve made soup,want some?”
    “no, i’m full”
    “Some fruits?”
    “No, full.”
    haha…

    “Heaven?”.. lol…

  • OH and when my friend comes by.. same thing.. eat eat eat!

  • LOL azn grandparents^^

  • AHHAha “heaven” ahha she’s so funny
    food is yummy (: but i guess it can get a bit irritating when it’s at your face 24/7

  • @Soda_Soap -

    Oh we have family friends that live up there. That’s why I figured she would have some idea of what I was trying to tell her. It was the last place she really went to w/ the whole family! Wasn’t like I was trying to tell her someone from Africa was calling haha.

    @yan_ni -

    That is scarily accurate of how my grandma is like haha. You deny one thing, she offers another over and over and over…AHH!

    @roaarr -

    Mhmm, you got it. Sorta like how I like rice, but I don’t wanna eat it at every meal like my grandma thinks I do X_X

  • @ChineseTwinkiePrincess -

    I hope it goes better then that phone call haha.

  • what an adorable grandmother!

  • hahaha… entertaining post! but yea… my cantonese is pretty good but still needs some work on it, to avoid problems with grandparents as well lol

  • GAR LA DAI!
    xD
    haha
    this blog entry made me laugh xD
    xxx~

  • LOL. so one of my grandmas only speaks toisan wa, which is a random graty sounding cantonese type dialect although she understands cantonese perfectly well. the only problem is that i have to guess half the time what it is she’s trying to tell me. the other grandma speaks a mix of shanghainese, cantonese, and mandarin. this causes much confusion as well.

    it’s funny though that you’re trying to re-learn cantonese. i’m also pretty impressed you know that cantonese word for interview. haha. i also took some mando classes in college and the speaking part was the most difficult. i can never get the tones right. my professor kept telling me that i had an english & canto accent 0_0. which basically means that i’m nowhere close to the correct pronunciation.

  • @blubunni326 -

    That’s why I only took Chinese 102 and didn’t go any further haha. I hated all those accent stuff! I was so horrible at it. Yea, toisan wa is what my grandma speaks as well. She likes to throw in random words in her language that messes me up haha.

    p.s. I kinda cheated with the word interview; I just said I’m going out to look for work haha. Eh, same difference.

  • @charmed1alwayz -

    Man, my Canto needs massive work because right now I probably sound like a 2nd grader (make it an idiot 2nd grader) to anyone that speaks fluent Canto haha.

    @yannie_y -

    Ahhh, why couldn’t you have told me the word for Canada earlier?? Then I wouldn’t have gone through that failed explanation with my grandma!

  • HAha congratulations your blog was the first I actually laughed at…physically!

    I know exactly what you’re talking about. Asian grandparents are just like that, although yours could be a little worse than mine lol.

    Since I am from canada I have to admit Canada is bit like heaven, since everything i see out my window is white.

    Keep blogging, love to read! :)

    *ps. I read your blog from a long time ago on datingish and i liked it but i forgot to add you, I’m glad i found you again!

  • This post was great…made me forget about everything and think about my grandma and grandpa. You’re lucky that your grandma speaks toisan and not some other dialect like my grandparents, we’re wenzhounese, so our dialect is like fj ans shanghainese mixed…toisan is much easier compared to that(I grew up speaking in canto, since my parents grew up in HK), but anyway..while I was reading you post, I kept thinking of my grandmother and me. She kept saying something to me in our language, and apple and cookie sound alike, and I kept asking, what? Cookie? apple?cookie? huh? and finally gave up and my grandmother just started laughing at me. And yes all grandmothers are like that they feed you 24/7. I don’t know why your grandmother is hypocritical about what she eats and what you eat, but maybe she’s saving the good stuff for you…

  • wow longest story ever – every time i started to read it i had to go somewhere so it took me 4 times to successfully read it lololll. anyway lol ur grandma sounds like mine – she speaks toisan (dunno how to spell..)huh?

  • @hopefull_soul -

    Woohoo, real LOL FTW!

    Haha glad you liked my story and glad you refound me . Ah another Canadian! I wanna go back up there again sometime soon. It felt so nice during the summer.

  • @XxXPingXxX -

    My parents are from HK as well . As for as her hypocrisy, my whole family also agrees. For some reason, she only wants to eat vegetable and…well I can’t remember what else because I hardly ever see her eat! She claims she doesn’t wanna eat meat but she will eat fish. Yet, when we offer her fish she don’t eat, claiming that she had just eaten. Every once in a while, I would just ask her right back why don’t you eat some rice and fish, and each time she would say either “I just ate” or “I don’t eat fish”, which is such a lie haha. I have no idea what’s going on with that.

  • @jeNNi_RoX -

    Apparently it’s toisan wa (according to others who commented), which I think is right. Hey, my post wasn’t THAT long…it was mostly dialogue, so that might be why it seemed longer haha. I think my Xanga Personality post was really long though. Thanks for taking the time to read my post! Trust me, I try to make my post as short as possible while still telling the full story

  • lol that was pretty amusin, typical of chinese grandparents to always offer food ~ they always seem to think your too shy to take any food or your parents aren’t raising you properly lol ~

    as for canada ~ it’s “Gar-Lar-Dai” (umm…if it helps, first word sounds like “add” then it’s “la” and then “big”) hehe ~

  • hahaha that made me laugh so hard, after not having had a real laugh all day. =]

  • @Roadlesstaken -

    haha…ok…I see what you mean now. and yeah….I don’t really know how to use this reply thing with all that HTML stuff…so if those codes appear..it’s b/c I don’t know how to use it…

  • loool. awesome story! but i’ve totally been there as my grandma also speaks very little english and i have to insert what little cantonese i know into the conversation in order for her to understand. :]

  • @Jenzies -

    Haha thank you very much. I think I won’t ever forget how to say Canada in Canto anymore.

    @indiechaos -

    Good to hear. I was beginning to wonder where you were! You usually update everyday.

    @XxXPingXxX -

    Yea, the html thing seem weird to me at first, but it works itself out once you send.

    @rygurl -

    Haha, I think if you know just certain phrases you can get by most conversations w/ the grandma. “I’m not hungry” is one good phrase to know =P

  • @Roadlesstaken - ah. yeah I was in the hospital. the post about it is up, but its protected. but you’re on the protected list so you should be able to read it.

  • @Roadlesstaken -

    I told my mom this story the other day; instead of not knowing where Canada was, she didn’t what heaven was. O_o

  • @BomCamChuoi -

    What?? How did she not know what Heaven is? haha.

  • @Roadlesstaken -

    Probably because I didn’t know what heaven was in Viet. My dad was sitting next to my mom and got pissed at my mom for not knowing. My mom and I both laughed =)

  • This made my day! I thought my grandma was the only one that drove me crazy like that! Good times!!! My grandma would always ask me what I was going to do which was usually something involving a computer. She would then ask me how I was going to do it. Now, my g’ma has NO understanding whatsoever about computers, so I tried to be vague so she’d somewhat understand it. NOPE! She wanted details which led to an inordinate amount of questioning. And like you, I had to sort of leave immediately and suddenly just to make it. When I got back, she kept asking… it was as if while I was away she had compiled a novel of questions just for me. Oh goodie. :

  • @MochaSprinkle -

    Haha nice. My grandma is sorta like that with VCRs and TVs. She can’t really read English, so I have to remind her which buttons are stop and play constantly!

  • funny story…my gram is a bit deaf, and i am being nice. She refuses to get a hearing aid, so we just deal; she likes to pretend that she can actually hear us, and so sometimes her replies are to entirely different questions…She’s a good sport about it though, she usually acts like we are the ones without a clue..does a good job of it too.

    Waiter: How is your dinner, ma’am?
    Gram (emphatically): Yes, please!
    the family: [fails to hold in laughter]

  • @BranmacFeabhail -

    Hahaha, I can so picture that in my head. I think my grandma is slowly but surely losing her hearing as well. I can definitely sneak by her easier now w/o her noticing me and asking me to eat!

  • Your story completely made my day.

    I’m okay in mandarin, but whenever I’m talking to my grandpa on the phone…I have no idea what he’s saying. he’s from mainland china, but he lives in taiwan….and he has this accent that well…even my mom cant understand…
    so our conversations are filled with a bunch of “ummms” and silences.. X]

    well we love ‘em anyway.

  • haha. i guess all grandmas have the same habit. mine kept asking me to eat all the time no matter how full i’m whenever i see her. but i guess thats the gesture of love.

  • @RciindiiR -

    Haha yea, my grandma has a toisan wa accent on her Canto, which my mom told me doesn’t help w/ bettering my understanding of the Cantonese language.

    @tollyyjoy -

    Yea, I think providing food is a way of showing love for my grandma as well. I’m starting to think the other reason why she always offer to make food for me because it’s one of the few things she can really do for me now haha. She can also knit clothes very well, but there’s only so many head caps I can take! =P

  • LOL!! Your grandma is so cute. My grandmas are exactly the same, always constantly offering me food. I guess all Canto/Asian Grandmas are like that. Canada should be pronounced, “Gah Naa daaa”, ^__^”" I’m so bad at pinyin.

  • I thought that was a really cute story with your grandma.  All my grandparents died long before I was born so I never have the privileges to know what it feels like having them.  But anyway, the story of you showing her where California and such reminds me of the lesson I tried to teach my kindergartners today on state and country.  It cracks me up!

  • LOLL its        gan na diee        (; ;x LOLL  i think youu have a funnnyy personality ;D LOLL its cute. even tho i was born in china… i never took chinese school.. i think my canto is pretty okay ;D LOLL

  • @Mistykalady -

    Haha nice. come to think about it, it does sometimes feel like I’m talking to a kindergartner when I’m trying to help my grandma understand something =P

  • I’m trying to pick up more Cantonese. Fortunately for me, my grandma knows what Canada (in Cantonese and English) is. My grandma also has a lot of character and stories, so many I can’t pick out a good one. Very funny post, though. :)

  • OMG…Great Story…..=)

  • @be88 -

    Thanks! Yea, I’m not gonna forget how to say Canada in Canto from now on haha

  • but canada sounds like… canada in canton. ga na da.
    but hahahah, such an asian thing to do. “aren’t you hungry?”

  • isnt canada in cantonese “cah-lah-dai”

    ive have quite a few experiences like that when i try and communicate with anyone in Chinese. its like i know it, but i cant REMEMBER IT!!!

  • @xOxMangOMadnessxOx -

    Haha thanks, I think I will always remember that word from now on. Urgh, don’t you hate it when things are on the tip of your tongue? Happens way too often w/ me.

  • hahah very funny man! i understand how that is with vietnamese.. lol i am trying to learn right now so that my dad won’t keep asking me over and over again what this word means.. lol

  • OMG! Your grandmother is hilarious. I learned my chinese from TVB ;)

  • @Got_Takoyaki - I’m learning it better from Wong Fu Production HK clips haha

  • Oh yeah. Their Chinese is pretty good. I found a girl on youtube and she’s so cute. She’s mix and she speaks fluent Chinese. XD

  • http://www.youtube.com/user/gcmeanslove
    She has Xanga too! Check her out. Let me know what you think of her. ^_^

  • @Got_Takoyaki - I’m really liking her!  She has a cute Chinese and British sound.

  • @Roadlesstaken - Yay! hehe! I like her too! We can both fangirls/boy! XDD How’s much canto can you speak and understand? ^_______^

  • @Got_Takoyaki - I can speak enough to get by.  I can understand almost everything she said though, which is cool.

  • This is an old post but I felt that I should leave you a comment.

    Wow I cant believe you don’t know how to say Canada in Chinese….was the first thing that came to my mind. Maybe next time, you could’ve grabbed a dictionary and just searched it up and show her it (which would be faster). anywhos, I think your grandma is sweet and caring for feeding you all the time. It’s because in her era, they didn’t have much to eat. Due to the Chinese government, and whatnot–eating well was a luxury. The map of course would not help… they weren’t taught geography. Nevertheless, you shared a great story.

    Grandmas are the best though, especially when they continue to stuff us when we are already full.

  • @dreaam - Yeah, I definitely needed some brushing up on my Canto.  She is sweet and caring, sometimes a bit too much I would say haha…but I suppose I would rather have this extreme over the other.

  • This will not actually have success, I consider this way.
