  • Why this guy is a Twilight fan

    (Warning:  some minor spoilers sprinkled around the entry, but nothing too major)

    In case you didn’t know, I’m a guy that happens to be a fan of the Twilight series.  Yup, they exist!  However, I’m not like one of those fanatical teen girls that go crazy over the books (especially over certain characters like Edward).  I have a couple of reasons why I like the series, which may not be what you would have guessed.

    Let me tell you how I first got into Twilight.  It was the beginning of this past summer when I initially heard of Twilight.  I was looking online when I saw a teaser video for the movie (which is coming out this Friday).  To be honest, I didn’t think it was THAT great, but from what I gathered there seemed to be a lot of buzz about it online.  A lot of people were comparing it to Harry Potter.  I never read the Harry Potter series, but I know how popular it is and if people are comparing Twilight to it then it must be pretty popular as well.

    So I stopped by the bookstore to pick up the book Twilight.  However, I ended up not reading it until the last month of summer, when I brought it to the beach as a reading material.  Before I knew it, I found myself reading the book for hours until I finished it a day or so later.  After that, I proceeded to pick up the next 3 books in the series and read them all within that month.

    The books aren’t perfect in my eyes.  I had to get used to the author’s writing style at first.  She tended to go on and on describing either everything that is happening in a scene or describing the features of people (especially Edward) in great detail.  The books also had the tendency to not have anything really big happen until the last 100 pages.  Finally, I wasn’t all that into the romance drama going on between Bella/Edward and Bella/Jacob.

    So what do I like?  Well despite the critique I made above, I found myself getting really into the story and the universe it took place in.  I liked the idea of a universe where vampires and shape-shifters existed, and how they try to coexist in the human world (that’s part of the reason why I also like the HBO show True Blood, which has some similarities to Twilight).  Once I got used to the writing style, I realized that it made me care more about all the characters and was very good at slowly building up to the climaxes of each book.  Also, some of the dialogue can be pretty funny, especially the ones coming out of Emmett’s mouth.

    Like I said before, Edward/Jacob/Bella are not exactly my favorite characters, despite them being the main ones.  After I was done with the series, I realized I was constantly reading because I wanted to see what would happen to a lot of the supporting characters.  By the end, I figured out the reason why I liked these characters (in particular 5 of them) was because they fit certain ideal archetypes of mine that I have for people in my life.  Here are the 5:

    1.  Carlisle Cullen
    Ideally, this is who I strive to be in my life.  He seems like the perfect father figure that is kind and is respected by those around him.  He has many strong characteristics that I value such as compassion, tolerance, empathy, and strong self-control (in his case strong control when it comes to his emotions and to blood).  He’s very admirable since he was able to find a way to be a “good” vampire, even though he had to suffer through some harsh times to get to that point.  If Carlisle existed in real life, he would probably be someone I look up to and highly respect.

    2.  Emmett Cullen
    Emmett fits my expectations for how a big brother should be.  He’s very protective and loyal, yet still has a big heart.  At the same time, he can be very laid back, funny and sarcastic (especially with all his suggestive comments), yet can be serious when needed.  He actually reminds me a lot of how I am now.  I can see my little brother describing me in a similar way.

    3.  Seth Clearwater
    Now this character would be my ideal younger brother or son.  He is probably one of the most honest, genuine, and purist character of the book.  Very optimistic, happy, generous and chill, he definitely a kid I would want to take care of.  In the book, he is one of the first people to see the Cullens as people, not just vampires, and I like how he’s not prejudice at all.  He also got a strong sense of loyalty and a strong sense of right and wrong.  Now who wouldn’t want to know a person like that?

    4.  Jasper Hale
    This guy would be the wise friend that I would go to whenever I need help or some insight.  Loyal (notice a pattern?), honest, and perceptive, I could see myself going to him when I need to figure out a problem.  He seems to be a very honorable gentleman that has a strong moral code as well.  In addition, he probably the ultimate empathetic person with his powers to control other emotions.  If I had that I would be an amazing therapist!

    5.  Garrett
    Finally, Garrett would be that trustful, fun friend that I would take to experience the world.  He’s open-minded (as seen when he attempts try to be “vegetarian”), honorable, and has a passion for justice.  That speech he gave at the end of Breaking Dawn, as well as that line he said to Kate (“If we live through this, I’ll follow you anywhere woman.”) were quite courageous and shows a lot of confidence.  Including the fact he has an adventurous soul, Garrett would be the ideal bro (I’m watching way too much How I Met Your Mother).

    Needless to say, I’m excited to go see the movie to see how my favorite characters are portrayed.  I’ll leave the Edward/Jacob/Bella crap for the teen girls .

    P.S. Ashley Greene, the actress playing Alice (the short haired chica in the first picture at the top), is H-O-T (pictures below).  Another incentive for us guys to watch

    I’ll let her suck me any day (my blood of course )!

    P.P.S. I know, I know, this was probably one of the most dorkiest post I’ve ever made.  Might as well take the dork factor all the way!  Just for funsies; me as a Twilight vampire:

    Go check out Twilight this Friday!

    @laurelitavera -

  • Ohhh , i know i’ll like it :) but ..kinda lazy lol

  • I saw the previews for this movie the other day; nothing too spectacular. I didn’t realize they had books out. Yes, a dorky post at best =)

  • I really liked the books and I’m super excited to see the movie :)

  • I never read the books but I heard that although they’re not well written from a literary point of view, they’re very addictive.

    Maybe I’ll watch the movie before I take on the books :P

  • haha, thanks. :] i’m sure you’ll have no problem getting a girlfriend, your patience will probably work out for you in the end. ;] it’s interesting to know you’re a fan of the twilight series, most guys just complain about how stupid it is and i also like true blood. haha. :]

  • wow!
    a boy that likes twilight!

  • @BomCamChuoi -

    Yea, the movie actually has a pretty small budget, but the actors in the movies are pretty good. I hope it does well.

    @roooosah -

    Haha that’s pretty well said. Probably not the best writing, but the writing is in such a way that makes the book addictive. Don’t quite understand it. Yea I would say watch the movie first and if it’s interesting go check out the book. Thanks for subscribing btw

    @d_loves@datingish -

    Yea, I picked up the book not knowing that it was mainly read by teenage girls and older moms, but I ended up liking it anyways (although not for the same reasons as them probably). One last episode of True Blood left! I’m excited.

    @s_h_a_sha -

    Hmm, you should recommend this post and then he will see it on his feed *hint*hint*. Hmm did a quick check and apparently Twilight is coming out on Nov 27th in Malaysia. Haha apparently that Edisen Chen movie is called Vampire Effect. Sounds kinda cool, might have to check it out

  • @mi1kandcerea1 -

    Yup, apparently we exist . My little brother likes it too! Maybe it runs in the family haha.

  • i actually watched the vampire effect a while ago. for some reason i liked it. haha. maybe it’s just because edison chen was in it. ;]

  • @d_loves@datingish -

    Oh didn’t know Jackie Chan was in it! I definitely need to check it out

  • hahaa,yeah he was but i totally forgot what his part was in the movie. maybe i should rewatch it sometime. haha.

  • Tweens will come out in groves for this movie. As for the book, I’ve read quotes and literally had to make a double take on them because they sound like they’ve been written in high school. It is a good story, and I think that’s what people love about the book.

  • haha im reading eclipse now btw.. so far so good. like you said, the writing style took a LONG time to adjust to. for the second book, i found it painful to read through since a big chunk of it was all lovey dovey crap lol all in all, book > movie anyday!

  • @stupid_systemus -

    I guess that make sense, since the POV is from a senior in high school. I’ll admit though, some of the dialogue can be pretty mushy. I reading something about how the actress playing Bella decided to change some of her lines slightly to make them less gooey haha.

    @chocolattt -

    Eclipse was my personal favorite. Yea as long as the movie does I decent job and doesn’t change anything major it’ll be alright to me. I’m pretty sure it will be, since it seems like the director and all the actors are really trying to stay true to the story.

  • @d_loves@datingish -

    He co-produced the movie I think and his only part was the ambulance driver near the beginning.

  • wow… 23 comments.

    But ahem… I didn’t read your entry. I just saw your pic. All i gotta say to that is…

    DORK.

    =] <3

  • @XxFtbllGrlxX -

    You know you love it

  • so I’m totally jealous of your name. Roadlesstaken. Frost is my absolute favorite. and I like twilight :]

  • @indiechaos -

    Haha glad you notice. I had this s/n for so long, but I absolutely love that poem.

    p.s. thanks for subscribing

  • Haven’t read the books myself cuz I’ve been busy but my fiance keeps telling me to. She’s read them like four or five times now and wants to go to a midnight showing tomorrow night.

  • I can’t wait to catch the movie, hopefully I can see it Friday. The books were such an easy read, although I didn’t care for the last book as much as I thought? I was expecting more of a battle to erupt.

  • @OmgaPhnx -

    Oh wow, she must be a super fan haha. The movie is gonna have more action than the book, I think to appeal to the male audience, so I hope you like it.

    @blubunni326 -

    Yea, I personally thought the last book was okay, but not as bad as some people said. I kinda liked how the book ended, only because by doing it that way none of my favorite characters had to die. Still, I part of me wanted it to be like how Eclipse ended, except on a bigger scale haha

  • You chose the best characters out of the book, and for all the right reasons.

  • @MyHomeIsWriting -

    I’m glad you approve . Alice would be up there as well. Thanks for the rec btw!

  • @Roadlesstaken - I’m tired of seeing people bash the book for the Edward/Bella relationship. It’s really not that bad. I enjoyed the book for a lot of the same reasons you did, so I was pleased to see this post.

  • @MyHomeIsWriting -

    I know what you mean. I fine w/ their relationship, but I just prefer the other elements of the books

  • Explain the literary value of the Twilight series?

  • I liked Edward, was a bit ambivalent towards Bella, and despised Jacob. My favorite characters were actually Alice and Jasper. Most of the minor characters were interesting.

    Like you, I had to get used to the writing style. It was very unconventional and not always in a good way.

    My main critique of the book (other than the fact that, as one of my friends put it, it is the gateway drug into Harlequinn romances) is that she builds and builds suspense and never really delivers. Two things she fails to give the audience that she built up to: a good sex scene and a good battle scene. (Seriously, what’s with wrapping up the Volturi showdown with a two sentence commentary on schoolyard bullies?)

  • @The_Fallen_Eight -

    Like I hinted, it’s no great work of literature. It’s just a guilty pleasure series, sorta like how most reality shows are crappy but it somehow sucks you in.

  • @Krissy_Cole -

    For me, the sex scene wasn’t that big, but I agree with the build up towards a good battle scene. The closest it came to that was in Eclipse, and even then we didn’t get to really check out the main big battle. That’s actually why I’m looking forward to the movie version of Eclipse. They will probably show that in the movie and I hope so. I wanna see the Cullens fight using all their skills along side the shape-shifters.

  • @Roadlesstaken - True, but you could always choose to turn off thee tele.

  • HAHA i loved this post
    i totally agree with you on how you portrayed the characters
    but you left out alice!
    alice is like the ideal older sister don’t you think?

  • @enyczbest -

    Haha Alice would have probably been my 6th favorite. She would be a pretty good older sister wouldn’t she? She would always know (and see) when I’ll make good or bad decisions at the very least haha.

  • she looks better than BELLA LOLS !!! i agree, she was superr cute. and that rosalie girl ! hahahaa..damn, edward..he was pretty damn sexy lol

  • You know.. You are probably one of my favorite people now after reading this blog.
    Frankly I thought the movie wasn’t that great, but I fell in love with all of the books.

  • @Princess_Lynda - Ahh yes, I remember writing this way before the craze started.  When I picked up the book, it wasn’t what I was expecting but I thought it was enjoyable enough.  Wasn’t a big fan of the main characters, but those side characters were cool.
